The Altfranken tunnel is located in the course of the federal autobahn 17 at the level of the Altfranken district in the west of Dresden , where it is a landscape tunnel under the Altfranken Park (also Lucknerpark ).

With a length of 345 meters, the 29 meter wide underpass with a 4.5 percent west-east gradient has two tubes that contain two lanes in the east and three in the west.

Already in the planning phase of the motorway there was resistance on the part of the population and the local council against the local cutting of the route planned above ground. In addition, one did not want to accept the destruction of a large part of the Lucknerpark. The open-cut landscape tunnel was then built between 2000 and 2002 . The twelve-meter-deep excavation pit was spanned by a wooden bridge for pedestrians and, along Otto-Harzer-Strasse, by a single-lane temporary bridge from former NVA stocks. After the backfill, the widely visible aisle of the park was replanted with trees and bushes.

The tunnel was completed in 2004. On December 22, 2004, the 8.85 kilometer section between the Dresden-Gorbitz (2) and Dresden-Südvorstadt (3) junctions was opened, in which the Altfranken tunnel, the Dölzschener connected by the Weißeritztal bridge and Coschützer Tunnel as well as two other valley bridges are located.
