Gohlis is a district of the city of Dresden and belongs to the locality of Cossebaude . Gohlis consists of the districts Ober- and Niedergohlis and is located in the west of Dresden south of the Elbe on the Elbe Cycle Path .
history
Gohlis is first mentioned in a document in 1144. The place name goes back to the Old Sorbian “Gołuš (a)” / “Gołyš” and is derived from “goły” (bare, empty), meaning “settlement on bare / forestless land”. In 1260 the place was the property of the Lords of Goluz that the Meissner canons here Vorwerk transferred. After this Vorwerk was dissolved, Gohlis was divided into the two municipal parts of Niedergohlis and Obergohlis. Niedergohlis was in the possession of the Seusslitz monastery for many decades and came to a Dresden councilor after the Reformation .
In addition to fishing on the Elbe, agriculture was also of economic importance, as some farm estates, especially in the old town center of Nieder- and Obergohli, are reminiscent of. Many historical farmsteads from the 16th to 19th centuries have been preserved to this day. The oldest house from 1695 on the former Ziegenweg (today Windmühlenweg 1) marks the entrance to the alley village of Obergohlis and is part of the long-distance cycle path on the Elbe. The farms, which are characterized by agriculture, now house an organic farm, goat and cattle breeding, apartments, an animal boarding house and an art courtyard with a variety of cultural events. Many young families with children live in Gohlis today.
The Gohlis windmill , which is still preserved today, was built around 1828 . Today there is a beautiful beer garden right on the Elbe at the mill. In the 19th century, numerous nurseries settled in Gohlis. In 1886 the place got its own school. From 1906 the tram to Cossebaude went through Gohlis, in 1991 the line was discontinued. A tram station was built for this tram in Gohlis on Meißner Landstrasse. In the 20s, some small businesses settled in the village. On April 1, 1974 Gohlis came to Cossebaude as a district and was incorporated together with Cossebaude on July 1, 1997 to Dresden.
Elbe floods in 2002
In August 2002, Gohlis was one of the areas around Dresden most severely affected by the Elbe floods . Niedergohlis was able to be evacuated in good time before it was under water for days. All houses damaged by the flood were renovated. The area of a residential complex that was built after 1990 and, contrary to earlier regulations, was built in the flooded area of the Elbe, was particularly affected.
