Altstadt I and Altstadt II are two districts of the city center of Dresden . They largely combine those corridors on the left Elbe that were part of Dresden before the great waves of incorporation in the 19th and 20th centuries.

They extend beyond the historic city center to parts of the Dresden suburbs and, together with the Neustadt district, are among the largest districts in the Saxon state capital in terms of area. While almost all other parts of the city are in their own districts, Altstadt I and Altstadt II consist of several districts. The district Old Town I, which is essentially completely within the 26er Ring , includes not only the Inner Old Town but also the inner Wilsdruffer Vorstadt and the western Seevorstadt including Prager Strasse and the Pirnaische Vorstadt .

The district of Altstadt II, however, includes the Südvorstadt and Johannstadt as well as the eastern Seevorstadt with the Great Garden and the outer Wilsdruffer Vorstadt (area of Papiermühlengasse / former coal station ). The border between the two districts initially runs along Ammonstraße to Wiener Platz , from there via St. Petersburger Straße to the north to around Georgplatz and then across Bürgerwiese and between Güntzwiesen and Blüherpark in the direction of Straßburger Platz . From there it moves north along the 26er Ring to the Albertbrücke . The area of the two old town districts thus extends from the Nossener Brücke in the west to the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in the east and from the Marienbrücke in the north to the campus of the Technical University in the south.

Bordering districts are Friedrichstadt in the northwest, Löbtau in the west, Plauen in the southwest, Räcknitz and Zschertnitz in the south, Strehlen in the southeast and Gruna , Striesen and Blasewitz in the east. In all cases, these are former neighboring villages and later suburbs of Dresden. Neighboring to the north on the right bank of the Elbe are the Neustadt district with the Inner Neustadt , the Leipziger Vorstadt and the Radeberger Vorstadt as well as Loschwitz on a short section .

As districts, old town I and II are primarily of importance for the cadastral system . The reason for the division of the old town into two districts is that the numbering of all parcels of a district with a maximum of four-digit numbers, which is customary in Dresden, would not have been sufficient with the large number of individual properties in the old town.

For the purposes of municipal statistics , in 1992 the entire urban area, i.e. H. also in the area of the two old town districts, initially a large number of statistical districts were formed, each of which was grouped into statistical districts in a further step . Here, too, the boundaries of the district were not taken into account either in the formation of the statistical districts or in the city districts; as a rule, they are oriented directly to road boundaries.

The statistical districts in the two districts are, in addition to the inner old town and the Pirnaische Vorstadt, the Wilsdruffer Vorstadt / Seevorstadt-West , the Seevorstadt-Ost / Großer Garten as well as the Johannstadt-Nord and -Süd, which together with the Friedrichstadt not belonging to the districts form the old town district .

In the district of Altstadt II there are also the statistical districts of Südvorstadt-Ost and -West, which are administratively already in the district of Plauen . Other, smaller parts of the Old Town districts also do not belong to the Altstadt district: This applies in particular to the extreme west of the Altstadt II district, which is already part of the statistical districts of Löbtau-Nord and -Süd and thus to the district of Cotta , as well as the southeastern Johannstadt, which as part of Striesen-Süd is already assigned to the city district Blasewitz .
