Life

Gottlob Friedrich Thormeyer was born as one of seven children of the shoemaker Gottlob Friedrich Thormeyer and Christiane Regina. Strong born in Dresden. Thormeyer studied painting at the Dresden Art Academy under Giovanni Battista Casanova , but soon switched to architecture , with Friedrich August Krubsacius and Gottlob August Hölzer being his teachers. In 1812 he was appointed royal court architect .

In 1814 in Dresden he built the flight of stairs to the Brühlsche Terrasse , a monument in honor of Jean-Victor Moreau on the Räcknitz -Höhe and the gatehouses on the main avenue in the Great Garden . Thormeyer belonged to the demolition commission, which took care of the decongestion of Dresden . The designs for the buildings of the Trinity Cemetery and the Church of St. Anne come from him. The “Harmonie” association also had a hall built in at Palais Brühl at Schießgasse 10 based on his designs . The design for the Calberlasche Zuckersiederei on Theaterplatz (Hotel Bellevue from 1853 to 1945) probably goes back to him.

Thormeyer made great contributions to the reconstruction of Bischofswerda after the great fire of 1813. According to Thormeyer's plans, the grave monument for the poet of the Wars of Independence , Theodor Körner , was built and inaugurated on September 23, 1814 in the cemetery in Wöbbelin . In 1826 he delivered the plans for the department store on Antonsplatz . In 1827 he erected the first massive building in the Swiss house style on the bastion on behalf of the Saxon state . He designed bath houses for Tharandt and Radeberg .

From 1827 to 1829 Thormeyer created two gatehouses at the Leipziger Tor on the former city ​​fortifications of Altendresden . One of these buildings, built in the classical style, still stands today on the northwest side of Palaisplatz . In 1825 he built the house at Antonstrasse 8 . Thormeyer also built tenement houses, such as the house at Polierstrasse 19 .

Gottlob Friedrich Thormeyer was a member of the Dresden Freemason Lodge to the three swords and Astraa to the green diamond . He died in Dresden in 1842. His grave is in the Elias cemetery there in field C 5-32.
