Location of the municipality of Wöbbelin in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district | ||
Wöbbelin is a municipality in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). It is administered by the Office Ludwigslust-Land with its seat in the non-official city of Ludwigslust .
Wöbbelin is known for the grave of the nearby poet Theodor Körner, who died in the Wars of Liberation in August 1813 .
geography
The municipality includes the districts of Wöbbelin and Dreenkrögen, as well as the Funkamtsiedlung, which was created in the 1950s together with the medium-wave transmitter Wöbbelin .
In Dreenkrögen there is a 6.8 hectare bathing lake that was created through gravel mining. The municipality is traversed by the New Canal , the Ludwigsluster Canal and the Krullengraben , among others .
history
1333 Wöbbelin was first mentioned as "Wopelyn".
In 1813 the liberation fighter and poet Theodor Körner was buried in Wöbbelin. His friends Ackermann, Friedrich Christoph Förster , Thümmel and Nostiz dug his grave under the oak of Wöbbelin. The funeral procession was led by Stiebel. The grave monument for Theodor Körner was erected according to plans by the architect Gottlob Friedrich Thormeyer and inaugurated in the cemetery on September 23, 1814. The grove with the graves of Körner and some family members developed into a national-patriotic memorial shortly after his death. In addition to Theodor Körner, his father Christian Gottfried Körner and his mother Maria Wilhelmine Jakobine (Minna) Körner as well as his sister, the painter Emma Körner , and his aunt, the painter Dora Stock , found their final resting place here. At the Körner celebration on August 26, 1863, Förster and Stiebel spoke first. The closing speech was held by the Lützow hunter and fraternity member Karl Horn . Sheets of the Wöbbeliner oak were sent to associations that contributed to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Körner's heroic death with donations.
The National Socialists planned to build a large “Theodor Körner Memorial” as a Nazi consecration site, including the Hitler Youth homes and parade ground. Only a new museum building was realized in 1938, replacing the one from the second half of the 19th century.
In 1945, in the last months of the Second World War, a subcamp of the Hamburg-Neuengamme concentration camp was set up in the immediate vicinity of the city of Ludwigslust , which was named KZ Wöbbelin because of its location on the road to Wöbbelin . After the camp was liberated by American troops on May 2, 1945, more than 160 victims of this camp found their final resting place in the park of the Körner Memorial.
During the GDR era, a company holiday camp was maintained in Wöbbelin by the Leipzig radio station for the children of its employees.
