Groß Godems is a municipality in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). It is administered by the Parchimer Umland Office based in Parchim.

Geography and traffic

About half of the municipality is covered by forest. Groß Godems lies in a very hilly terminal moraine landscape . The largest hill is the Tobiasberg at 103  m above sea level. NHN in the very east. Larger parts of the community area are forested. The Godemser Tannen forest is worth mentioning . There are no larger lakes or rivers in the municipality. Only the Rote Bach , which forms the northern boundary of the municipality, is to be mentioned. It flows into the Müritz-Elde-Wasserstraße a little north of the community .

The A 24 leads through the municipality in the south , which can be reached via the Parchim junction. The municipality is located about eight kilometers south of Parchim .

history

Groß Godems was first mentioned in 1291 as villa Wodamiz . The name comes from the Slavic word voda for water . The place name could mean place on the watercourse .

On July 1, 1950, Karrenzin was incorporated into Groß Godems. On January 1, 1951, the communities of Groß Godems and Wulfsahl merged to form the new community of Karrenzin.

Coat of arms, flag, official seal

The municipality has no officially approved national emblem, neither a coat of arms nor a flag. The official seal is the small state seal with the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg. It shows a looking bull's head with a torn neck fur and a crown and the inscription "• GEMEINDE GROß GODEMS • LANDKREIS LUDWIGSLUST-PARCHIM".
