Nepenthes papuana is a carnivorous plant belonging to the genus pitcher plants ( Nepenthes ). It wasfirst describedby the naturalist Benedictus Hubertus Danser around 1910. Its specific epithet "papuana" is borrowed from the origin of this plant, it comes from Papua New Guinea .
description
Nepenthes papuana is a vigorous, perennial and evergreen subshrub with more or less climbing shoots that lignify with age and form new shoots from the wood . The leaves of Nepenthes papuana are elliptical and tapering to a point, sit alternately on the shoot and are up to 34 cm long. Their surface is matt and glossy.
The pitchers of Nepenthes papuana show a clear dimorphism . The lower pitchers are jug-shaped and have barely pronounced wing strips, the lid is wide-oval.
The top jugs, on the other hand, are bulbous-cup-shaped, have broad wing strips and a rather heart-shaped lid. The Nepenthes papuana pitchers are generally around 14 cm long and are therefore quite small in relation to the foliage. Their coloring is usually a light flesh red with dark grain.
Flowers and seeds
The flowers of Nepenthes papuana are separately sexually dioecious ( dioecious ) and appear on paniculate inflorescences about 40 cm long . They have four petals and are greenish to reddish in color.
Home / origin
As already mentioned in the introduction, Nepenthes papuana comes from Papua New Guinea in the Indo-Pacific archipelago . There it grows both in open humid savannas and in light, mist-shrouded mountain forests at altitudes of 250 to 900 meters.
Botanical history
Of Nepenthes papuana no natural hybrids are known. It is closely related to Nepenthes neoguineensis .
