Parental leave is a municipality in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). It is administered by the Office Dömitz-Malliß , based in the city of Dömitz .

geography

The municipality of Karenz is located in the southwest of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania within the Griesen area . South of the village is the 71 meter high Steinberg , the highest point on the Wanzeberg . The federal highway 191 runs one and a half kilometers south of the village.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1270 as a Carniste and was a village with alleyways and an estate.

On January 1, 1974, parental leave was incorporated into Grebs (since June 12, 2004 part of the Grebs-Niendorf municipality ). On May 1, 1990, the place became an independent municipality again.

The parish of Karenz will celebrate its 750th anniversary in 2020 together with the Malliß district of Conow.

The municipality has no officially approved national emblem, neither a coat of arms nor a flag. The official seal is the small state seal with the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg. It shows a looking bull's head with torn off neck fur and crown and the inscription "GEMEINDE KARENZ".

The architectural monuments of the municipality are listed in the list of architectural monuments in Karenz (Mecklenburg) .

The approximately 20 meter high observation tower on the Steinberg offers a panoramic view of several kilometers into the surroundings of the village, with good visibility as far as Ludwigslust and Dömitz . The former army site in the immediate vicinity is used as a training course for all-terrain vehicles. On the southern slope of the Steinberg lies the Karenzer Heide, which is designated as a protected area according to the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive because of its gorse population .
