geography

View of Banzkow from the west

Banzkow is 15 kilometers south of Schwerin . The Stör waterway flows through the community . This connects the Schweriner See over the Müritz-Elde waterway with the Müritz and the Elbe . The Banzkower lock in the course of the canal regulates the water level of the Schwerin lake next to the weir at its northern outlet . The lock is bypassed by the Mühlengraben. The New Canal branches off from here. In the northwest, the terrain reaches heights of up to 56.2  m above sea level. HN . The community is located in the Lewitz nature reserve . The wetland Mirower Torfmoor is located south of the village of Banzkow .

The districts of Banzkow, Goldenstädt , Jamel and Mirow belong to the community .

history

Banzkow was first mentioned on October 31, 1300 as Bancekowe . Other forms of the name are Banscekowe (1327) and Bantzekowe (1350). The name refers to the Slavic locator of the place and means place of Bąček .

Lock in the course of the Stör waterway

There has been a water mill in Banzkow since 1337 , which is still evident today in the Mühlengraben , a branch of the Stör waterway. In 1534 a bridge was built over the Stör. An important trade route to Hamburg, which is still called the Hamburg freight route today, used to run along this route . Customs duties were levied for crossing the sturgeon. The main lock, completed in 1566, was rebuilt several times and rebuilt in 1926. Until 1856, the operator of the lock was the water miller, who needed the water accumulation and the drainage over the mill ditch to operate his mill. The water wheel stood still while ships were being locked.

Banzkower Mill from 1874

The abundance of wood meant that Banzkow became known as a village of carvers and turners. Originally, Banzkow belonged to the Count of Schwerin , from 1433 on to the state domain. Until the 16th century, the Zarrentin monastery also had various rights. In 1760 a post mill was built in Banzkow, in 1872 the neo-Gothic brick church . The gallery Dutch windmill , immortalized in the coat of arms today, dates from 1874. The church was designed by Theodor Krüger on the site of a previous building and consecrated in 1875.

The Banzkow Carnival Club "Grün-Gold" e. V. (BCC) was founded in 1953 and is therefore the third oldest carnival association in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (in the KLMV ).

On June 29, 2007, during a festive evaluation of the competition "Our village has a future - our village should become more beautiful" in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Prime Minister Harald Ringstorff presented representatives of the Banzkow community with the first prize worth 30,000 euros. In the national competition “Our village has a future”, in which a total of 3,625 municipalities participated, Banzkow was able to win one of eight gold medals. The award was presented in January 2008 at the Green Week in Berlin by the then Federal Minister Horst Seehofer . In the same year Banzkow organized the "State Harvest Festival". Banzkow won the silver medal in the Europe-wide competition Entente Florale Europe in 2010.

Banzkow was the seat of the Banzkow office from 1992 to 2013 , which was dissolved by a merger on January 1, 2014. The newly formed Crivitz Office operates a citizens' office in Banzkow.

The district Mirow was first mentioned in 1270. Low German hall houses and the neo-Gothic church have been preserved in its townscape. The village street is accompanied by a handsome avenue of lime trees.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Banzkow
Blazon : "In green over a golden wave shield foot a golden Dutch windmill, accompanied on both sides by a golden linden leaf."

The coat of arms was designed by the Schwerin heraldist Karl-Heinz Steinbruch . It was approved on August 2, 2000 by the Ministry of the Interior and registered under the number 220 of the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Justification of the coat of arms: A windmill was chosen as a central component of the coat of arms, as the existence of several mills has been proven since the Middle Ages and the gallery Dutch windmill, which still exists today, is the town's landmark. The sturgeon waterway is symbolized by the corrugated shield base and the linden leaves refer to the linden-lined passage through the district of Mirow.

flag

The municipality does not have an officially approved flag .

Official seal

The official seal shows the municipal coat of arms with the inscription "GEMEINDE BANZKOW".

Incorporations

At the same time as the local elections that took place in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on June 7, 2009, the formerly independent municipality of Goldenstädt was incorporated into Banzkow with the hamlet of Jamel.

A model of a chip card reader was set up from the Sukow direction, symbolizing the newer part of Banzkow. The driveway from the direction of Plate is decorated by an open village gate, which should indicate the village center with its old farms.
