About this picture

The municipality of Eldena is located on the Elde and belongs to the Grabow district in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany).

geography

The place is 14 kilometers southwest of Ludwigslust and about 15 kilometers northeast of Dömitz . The Elde Lateral Canal, which is part of the Müritz-Elde waterway , branches off from the original course of the Elde , which is called Alte Elde from the fork .

In addition to the main town Eldena, the districts Güritz, Stuck and Krohn belong to the community.

history

The place name goes back to the river Elde, which flows by close to the place. Eldena was founded by the establishment of a nunnery ( Kloster Eldena ) of the Benedictine order between 1229 and 1235. In a major fire in the village in 1835, the church, as the former center of the monastery, was almost completely destroyed. Today's neo-Gothic St. John's Church was built on the preserved walls from 1835 to 1839 . The spire dates back to 1850, the organ was built in 1840. From 1974 to 1978 the church was renovated, a new altar was consecrated in 1991, the organ was repaired in 1995.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent communities of Günz, Krohn and Stuck were incorporated. On September 1, 1973, Bresegard was incorporated, but the place regained its independence shortly before the fall of the Wall .

coat of arms

Eldena coat of arms
Blazon : "Above a golden, humiliated wave shield foot in blue, a resisting silver Easter lamb with a four-fold openwork golden halo and with the angled right front foot holding a golden paw cross with a three-lipped golden flag."

The coat of arms was designed by the Schwerin heraldist Karl-Heinz Steinbruch . It was approved on May 13, 2014 by the Ministry of the Interior and registered under the number 352 of the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Justification of the coat of arms: The history of the nunnery has a decisive influence on the design of the community's coat of arms. The symbolism of the convent seal from 1345 is taken over by the depiction of the Easter lamb with a halo. The Lamb of God carries the flag of John the Baptist, the patron saint of the nunnery. The corrugated shield symbolizes the Elde, which gives the community its name.

The local sports club has been called "LSV Schwarz-Weiß Eldena" since 1990. The footballers of this club celebrated their greatest success in 2014 with promotion to the Landesliga West. In June 2009 the 90th anniversary was celebrated.
