history
The name is of Slavic origin and means something like "place of the herons" or "heron place". It has not been established whether the settlement was built on the old Slavic residential area. The repeatedly appearing representation that the church is on a castle wall has been refuted by drilling into the ground. The church stands on a hill, the highest point in the village center.
On January 1, 1951, the previously independent municipality of Zapel, Hof (also Hof Zapel) was incorporated into the municipality of Zapel, Dorf (also Dorf Zapel).
The municipality lost around a quarter of its population in 2004.

coat of arms
Blazon : “In green a silver heron armored in gold with a raised left gold stand; Accompanied: in the upper right corner by two falling golden acorns on a slanted golden stem, in the upper left corner by two falling golden acorns on a golden stem placed obliquely to the left. "
The coat of arms and the flag were designed by Karl-Friedrich Röhl from Hamburg . It was approved together with the flag on April 26, 2006 by the Ministry of the Interior and registered under the number 301 of the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. |
|
Explanation of the coat of arms: In the coat of arms, the heron is supposed to be used as a talking symbol to create a visual reference to the Slavic place name (czapla = heron). According to the design principle of the pars pro toto, the acorns represent an outstanding natural monument in the community, a solitary kingdom lasting several centuries. The importance of this oak for the townscape was recognized as early as 1859 when the resident pastor Theodor Joachim Wilhelm Mecklenburg asked the Grand Duke in verse to prevent its intended felling through his princely objection. |
flag
The flag is striped in green, white and green across the longitudinal axis of the flag cloth. The green stripes each take up a quarter, the white stripe takes up half the length of the flag cloth. In the middle of the white stripe is the municipal coat of arms, which takes up two thirds of the height of the flag. The relation of the height of the flag cloth to the length is like 3: 5.
Official seal
The official seal shows the municipal coat of arms with the inscription "GEMEINDE ZAPEL".
