The Banzkower Mill

The Banzkower Mühle (also Lewitzmühle) is a windmill in the Mecklenburg village of Banzkow .

history

Originally there was a water mill in the middle of the village of Banzkow in the Middle Ages. For many years it served as a granary. From the 15th century, this also supplied the ducal kitchen in Schwerin . Later, the mill was owned by the sovereign before after the Thirty Years' War to millers in annual lease passed. Around 1760, a post mill was built in addition to the water mill . At the same time, many new windmills were built or enlarged in Mecklenburg. The first Dutch windmills also appeared.

In 1872 the watermill was demolished because the miller always had to stop grinding when opening a lock. In 1874 the Galerieholländermühle was built near the existing post mill. Both mills were close together until 1919, when the post mill was demolished. In 1957 the Dutch windmill, which had been used for grinding until then, ceased operations. In the years 1974 to 1976 this was converted into a restaurant by the LPG "Clara Zetkin". Its former appearance could be restored with two dummy wings. In 1994 it finally passed to a new owner and in 1995 it was converted into a modern hotel with its own saltwater pool.

Since the mill is a listed building, some compromises had to be made when it was completely renovated. Today it is the last windmill in Lewitz .

In October 1994 a discreet meeting of the SPD and CDU took place in the old mill. At that time, both parties discussed a possible grand coalition in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for weeks .

Heraldic use

Wapen Banzkow.svg

Today the Banzkower Mühle is the landmark of your village and can be found in its coat of arms. The coat of arms is green and shows a golden Dutch windmill above a golden corrugated shield base. It is decorated with a golden linden leaf on both sides.

The fact that the wings of the Dutch mill in the coat of arms are arranged counterclockwise instead of clockwise as usual goes back to the graphic artist, who apparently had no precise knowledge of this.
