Portrait of Minna Körner by Anton Graff

Minna Körner (born on March 11, 1762 in Nuremberg as Anna Maria Wilhelmine Jakobine Stock ; died on August 20, 1843 in Berlin ) was the wife of Christian Gottfried Körner . She was artistically active as a painter and writer, but was not known for outstanding works.

Life

Anna Maria was born in 1762 as the second daughter of the engraver Johann Michael Stock , from whom Johann Wolfgang von Goethe took lessons and described this in poetry and truth . Her older sister was the painter Dorothea Stock . She grew up in Leipzig and on August 7, 1785 married Christian Gottfried Körner, the Dresden Appellate Councilor, against the reluctance of his father. Her husband was together with her - also because of the improper connection with a craftsman's daughter - an enthusiastic patron and early supporter of the rebellious Friedrich Schiller , who stayed with Körner for several years at the time of their marriage and beyond. Schiller parodied the young housewife in the play Körner's Morning in 1787 . She was also portrayed several times by the painter Anton Graff , whom she also assisted in portraying Schiller.

Minna Körner gave birth to daughter Emma in 1788 and son Theodor in 1791 . Her sister joined the household around 1792 after the latter ended her engagement to Ludwig Ferdinand Huber . Minna Körner lost her two children while she was still alive; The Körner couple administered the literary estate of Theodor from 1813, which had become a patriotic figure through his work in the Wars of Liberation . Emma, who died in 1815, was also an artist.
