Georgsbrunnen
St. George's relief and medallion for King George

The Georgsbrunnen is a fountain created by Artur Volkmann in 1904 in the small courtyard of the Dresden Residenzschloss .

history

Artur Volkmann, who was born in Leipzig, created the fountain in 1904 in his workshop in Rome to commemorate King George of Saxony, who died in the same year . The client was the Royal Saxon Ministry of the Interior. Previously, the draft exhibited at the Leipziger Kunstverein was unanimously recommended for implementation by the academic council. The fountain was paid for with funds from the Saxon government's art fund.

The fountain is nestled between two windows on the south side of the small courtyard in the Dresden residential palace. The fountain was damaged when it was destroyed in the Second World War , but it was opened to the public again in the course of the restoration of the palace in 2009.

description

A low, rectangular sandstone fountain basin stands on a circumferential step . This was at this point long before it was used in the well and was the end point of an old pipeline . In this water was carried from the Holy Born in Leubnitz to the castle. A gargoyle in the shape of a dragon's head in Art Nouveau style is attached to the pool . Between the basin and the relief is the inscription "ST GEORGIUS EQUITUM PATRONUS" (German: St. Georg patron saint of riders). Above this, on a relief made of white Italian marble, St. George is depicted as he steps over the defeated dragon after the fight. The relief is signed with “A. VOLKMANN, 1904. ROM. ”Above the relief plate there is a round medallion with a portrait of King George. A roof covered with sheet copper closes the fountain at the top.

The fountain should not be confused with the St. Georgsbrunnen , created by Ernst Hähnel in 1886 and placed in front of the Sophienkirche .

criticism

In 1906, Ludwig Volkmann described the Georgs relief of the fountain as a positive example of the genre. Overall, the fountain is a good new work in public life.
