The dolphin fountain on the Brühl Terrace

The Dolphin Fountain is a fountain on the Brühl Terrace in Dresden .

Two flight of stairs leading to the Belvedere Hill enclose a 100 m², 14 meter wide water basin. The fountain sculpture is a putto riding a dolphin . A jet of water flows from the dolphin's mouth into a trickle clam and out of it into the basin below, which is surrounded by corals in the form of rays. In the fountain basin itself there are two smaller fountains, which were newly installed during the renovation in 1992 and were only detectable on older copperplate engravings . The fountain is surrounded by a railing in the Rococo style .

The dolphin fountain was created by Pierre Coudray in 1750 , the putto, the god of love as a winged child and the dolphin was created by Johann Gottfried Knöffler .

The fountain was part of the gardens of the Second Belvedere , which is no longer in existence, and is located on the Maiden Bastion . The figures are made of sandstone , the fountain cladding consists of shell and rock.

In 1879 water from the well penetrated the casemates below and was given a concrete floor in the spring of 1880. Since this was also leaking, the well was shut down in August 1880.

In 1945 the well system was destroyed by the effects of the war. The refurbishment of the well began in 1952. The copy of the sculpture of the fountain rider made of Cotta sandstone was completed in 1954 by the sculptor Werner Hempel and was installed in place of the original, the other components were repaired. The original of the fountain rider - also restored in the meantime - is in the garden of the baroque castle Rammenau .

The fountain was restored in 1991/92. To do this, it was completely dismantled, and the cannon yard below was closed with a concrete slab. The brush has been removed. During the renovation, the basin and mussel shell were lined with a lead apron. Restorations were made in Mühlleite sandstone. The pump technology is located in an underground structure to the right of the pool (water technology: Fa. Eberhard Grundmann), the framing grid was reconstructed by the art blacksmith Peter Bergmann. Headlights for evening and night lighting have been installed, but are rarely in use. The place in front of the fountain was planted with young linden trees. On May 28, 1992 the renovated well was put back into operation.
