history
Blasewitz is mentioned in a document in 1349 as a Vorwerk Blasenwicz, originally a Slavic farming and fishing village. The settlement east of Dresden developed into a sought-after villa location, especially in the 19th century and, after tough negotiations, was incorporated by the city of Dresden in 1921. On September 26, 1872, the Dresden horse-drawn tram took up regular service on the route from Blasewitz to Pirnaischer Platz and maintained a stop at this square.
Name of the place
In the period from 1860 to 1900, magnificent and splendid castle-like villas were built, mostly used as country houses or country houses, and made Blasewitz a unique villa location in Germany. The square was lined with magnificent buildings with the dominating White Castle . On May 5, 1921, the square was named Königsheimplatz in recognition of the Saxon secret government councilor Arthur Willibald Königsheim , the reformer and founder of the Waldparkverein and the Blasewitz villa colony. In 1922, Königsheimplatz received its dominant artistic enhancement, the European Fountain. This fountain system was designed by the Dresden sculptor Georg Wrba in 1921 and created a year later. The fountain is decorated with the figure Europe on a bull , sitting on the back of a bull , the king's daughter Europe is kidnapped by the god Zeus , who has been transformed into a bull .
After 1945
The bombing of Dresden in 1945 also destroyed buildings around Königsheimplatz. Between 1952 and 1956 the ruins were blown up and cleared. This affected the buildings around the square along Handelallee and other buildings. The resulting gaps in the villa development were supplemented by the communist rulers with prefabricated buildings from 1980 . This was accompanied by a devaluation of this Dresden villa location .
traffic
The Königsheimplatz stop of the Dresden tram of the same name is served by lines 6 ( Niedersedlitz - Wilder Mann ) and 12 ( Striesen - Leutewitz ) of the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe .
