The Neustadt is one of three parts of the Herford city center and belongs to the official district of Herford City .

location

The Neustadt is bordered by the Werre in the northeast, the Bowerre in the south and west and the Aa in the extreme northwest. The Bowerre runs from the Werre at Bergertor to the Aa in the area of the Steintorwall. Except for a small piece just before the mouth, it is cased and filled in. Along the Werre runs with the Lübbertorwall and the Bergertorwall part of the Herford ramparts that surround the city center. Beyond the former Bowerre lies the old town and out of town the Neustädter Feldmark begins behind the Werre . The Aa borders on the Radewiger Feldmark .

history

Before the new town was founded in the first half of the 13th century, the old town was protected by extensive swamp areas of the Werre in the area of today's new town. Excavations in the area of the Mittelstädter Mühle (today Linnenbauerplatz) have shown that the ground here had to be filled for the most part before the first houses in the new town could be built. The excavated soil came from today's river bed of the Werre between Bergertor and the mouth of the Aa. Thus the old course of the Werre became the Bowerre. The name probably goes back to the Central German word "borne", which can mean fountain, bubbling water or drinking trough.

The New Town of Herford was founded in 1224 by the Herford abbess of the Herford monastery and the Archbishop of Cologne as patron.

The Mittelstädter Brücke was built around 1400, one of the few connections between the old and new towns. There the water-powered Abbey Mill or Mittelstädter Mill stood on the Bowerre. It was demolished when the Bowerre was filled in in 1972. The history of the mill goes back to the 10th century.

In the 15th century the Fraterhaus and the Süsternkapelle were built on the Holland, which outlived the Reformation.

In 1634 the new town was united with the old town . Until then, the Neustadt had its own mayor.

On July 24, 1638 (during the Thirty Years' War ) the city of Herford was struck by a great fire that destroyed part of the Neustadt and almost all of Radewig (the third part of the city center).

Pedestrian zone

The central square of Neustadt is the Neuer Markt, which is part of the Herford pedestrian zone created in 1968 , which runs from Lübberstrasse via Neuer Markt into Höckerstrasse. In the old town the pedestrian zone continues over the street “Gehrenberg”, the old market and the Bäckerstraße to the Aa, where the Radewig begins.

Until the completion of the Herford bypass in the 1930s, federal highway 61 ran through these streets . Even after that, until the inner city ring was completed and the pedestrian zone was set up, all traffic to and from the north ran through the city center.

New market

As the center of Herford's new town and as part of the Herford pedestrian zone, the Neuer Markt is one of the most beautiful squares in Herford and is characterized by half-timbered and Renaissance architecture . This is where Lübberstrasse, Credenstrasse, Komturstrasse, Höckerstrasse, Hämelinger Strasse and Petersilienstrasse meet.

Lübberstraße, Lübbertor and Lübbertorwall

The Lübberstraße, which runs between the Neuer Markt and the Lübbertor, one of the five former Herford city gates, used to lead to the grounds of the Saxon court Libbere. Except for the northern part between Berliner Strasse and Werre, the street is part of the pedestrian zone. From the Lübbertor, the Lübbertorwall leads north-west along the Werre.

Petersilienstraße and Frühherrenstraße

Petersilienstraße runs alongside the Johanniskirche between Neuer Markt and Berliner Straße. Opposite the early mansion (see below), the artwork I have enough has been on the site of the Johanniskirche since October 2017 . Frühherrenstrasse is a short cul-de-sac that branches off from Petersilienstraße next to the Frühherrenhaus.

Komturstrasse

Komturstrasse was named in 1886 after the court of the headmaster, the commander. Before that, it was called Gottesrittergasse since the Middle Ages.

Höckerstrasse

The Höckerstraße got its name from the traders who "hawked" their goods in Herford in the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages, the ö was pronounced long because of the following c. The Hoekerfest, which has been held annually since 1973, is intended to remember the dealers. The mayor 's house (Crüwell house) at Höckerstraße 4 has a late Gothic stepped gable from 1538.

Wilhelmsplatz

Wilhelmsplatz is a green area within the Herford ramparts. It was created in 1885 in honor of the German emperor at the time.

The Wittekind monument , which depicts the adversary of Charlemagne Widukind on a horse, is located on Wilhelmsplatz . The equestrian statue represents the miracle of the spring, after which Widukind was baptized as a Christian. When his horse pawed through the Wiehen Mountains while riding and a spring emerged, Widukind saw this as a sign to profess Christianity.

In the house at Wilhelmsplatz No. 7, the so-called miracle healer Bruno Gröning is said to have cured a terminally ill boy in 1949.

On the western edge of Wilhelmsplatz there is a Schiller monument on Schillerstrasse .

Schiller Street

Schillerstrasse begins at Steintorwall, where the Bowerre forms the border between the old town and the new town. The continuation of Schillerstraße beyond the Bowerre in the old town is Arndtstraße. In the north, the Schillerstraße leaves the Neustadt at the Schillerbrücke over the Aa and leads in the Radewiger Feldmark to the railway embankment. From 1933 to 1945 the Schillerstraße was called Panförderstraße after a NSDAP member who lived in Herford.

Berlin street

The four-lane inner city ring laid out since the 1960s, to which large parts of Neustadt, Freiheit and Radewig fell victim, was given the name Berliner Straße in sections. Shortly before the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall , a one-meter-wide section of the wall was erected as a memorial in early November 2009 in the area where the street Holland meets Berliner Straße. At that time it was at the Brandenburg Gate .

Holland

The small street “Holland” runs parallel on a small piece of Berliner Straße. The street has had its name since 1886. It can be derived either from the old field name “up dem Holtland” (woodland) or from the word “Holand” for “high country”. The latter suggests a flood-free elevation that was washed up in ancient times. The field name can be traced back to the 13th century, with names such as "upme Hollande" and "in lico dicto uppe deme Holland".

The "Holland-Schänke" is one of the oldest Herford restaurants on the street. In September 1884 a general store with a bar was opened there. The restaurant initially had the name "Neutral State", which was changed to "Holland-Schänke" in 1938 when the grocery store was closed.

End butt

From the street “Holland”, the street “Endebutt” can be reached via a cul-de-sac, which is a dead end in both directions. The final debutt runs parallel to Lübbertorwall and Wilhelmsplatz. Since the Lübbertorwall is only permitted for pedestrians and cyclists, the houses standing there can only be reached by car via the Endebutt.

Bergertor and Bergertorwall

Bergertor

At the eastern end of Berliner Straße is the Bergertor, one of the five former Herford city gates. It bears this name because it leads to the Stiftberg . A war victims memorial has stood at Bergertor since 1968. On October 30, 2010, two pylons by the artist Dennis Oppenheim were placed in the extensive crossing area at Bergertor. The Bergertorwall runs along the Werre between the Bergertor and the Lübbertor.

Other streets in Neustadt are Credenstrasse, Hämelinger Strasse, Klosterstrasse and Augustastrasse.

Houses

Neustadt town hall

The former town hall of the Neustadt, which was independent until 1634, is located on the Neuer Markt and is a stone gabled house with a medieval core. Its gable from the time of the Weser Renaissance , which was torn down in 1930, was reconstructed in 1988/89.

Wulferthaus

The Wulferthaus on Neuer Markt, built in 1560, was named after its builder, the businessman and councilor Jobst Wulfert. Since 1577/78 it has had a gable in the style of the Lippe Renaissance and illustrates the self-confidence of Herford's merchants and bourgeoisie. At some point, the exterior of the building was changed significantly. Not only were the large windows facing Credenstrasse walled up, the lower half of the decorative facade was also almost completely walled up and a late Gothic bay was broken off. Between 1977 and 1979 the house was extensively restored by the owners at the time, the Biermann family, who had run a delicatessen shop there for years. Old approaches to the bay window and other remains of former building elements were found under the plaster. On the basis of these findings, among other things, the hallway and the lower gable windows were renewed. The front bay window was sensitively reconstructed based on models, which included the Wippermann house in Lemgo .

Early mansion

In the early mansion on Petersilienstraße, which has a Renaissance portal from 1591, the St. Dionys canons had their seat. In 1882 the submarine commander Otto Weddigen was born in this house . The building was completely renovated in 2006. Today the church entry point for the Evangelical Church District Herford is located there.

Mayor's House

The mayor's house is a listed Gothic residential and commercial building in Höckerstrasse, which was built in 1538 for the mayor of Herford's new town, Heinrich Crüwell.

Fountain

Neustadt fountain

At the northern end of Lübberstraße, the modern Hansebrunnen , erected in 1990 , stood until mid-2016 , which is shaped like a Hanseatic cog and reminds of Herford's membership in the medieval Hanseatic League. It was dismantled as part of the redesign of the pedestrian zone in Lübberstraße. A new location has not yet been found.

The Neustädter Brunnen , a Renaissance fountain from 1599, is located on the Neuer Markt. It shows a knight with a banner and shield from the free imperial city of Herford. The fountain, which was sold by the city around 1830, was rebuilt at its old location in 1962.

The already mentioned Wittekindbrunnen stands on Wilhelmsplatz .

schools

Wilhelm Oberhaus School

Close to Wilhelmsplatz are the Albert Schweitzer School , Herford's only school for the learning disabled, and the Wilhelm Oberhaus School , the city's only Catholic primary school.

Next door is the vocational college at Wilhelmsplatz of the Institute for Further Education in Economy and Society. V .
