The Herford Music School and the MARTa-Areal multi-storey car park with 456 parking spaces are in the immediate vicinity .

history

Lingerie and clothing factory

The Art Nouveau building was built in 1909 as a factory for the Elsbach shirt factory . Founded in 1848 in 1875 under the company Herford shirt factory J. Elsbach & Co. into the commercial register entered and was considered in 1914 as the largest European lingerie factory. After the Jewish Elsbach family had to sell their shares in the company in 1938, the building was used as a production facility by the Ahlers clothing company until the early 1960s . In memory of the last owner's sister who was murdered in a concentration camp, the square next to the Elsbachhaus and opposite the MARTa museum was named “Käte-Elsbach-Platz”.

post Office

In 1965 the Deutsche Bundespost took over the building. There she set up the new Herford main post office, which had its old location on Stephansplatz. The post office for the public was on the corner of Schillerstrasse. In the rest of the building, the mail distribution point was set up with an electronic mail distribution system for the then postcode control region 49, which covered parts of East Westphalia-Lippe and Lower Saxony. It was a forerunner of letter center 32, which was built on April 25, 1996 on Bielefelder Straße. In addition, the building was used for mail delivery , from which all deliverers distributed the mail in the city of Herford. For years there was also a car mailbox for a large catchment area around Herford and from the Lippe district, as the mail that was thrown there late in the evening reached the recipient the next day. Next to the Elsbachhaus was the parcel transhipment point for the postcode control region 49, from where in the early years the parcels were brought with baggage carts to the mail trains or mail cars of the long-distance trains. The tasks of the parcel transfer point were later taken over by the parcel center 33 in Bielefeld.

Office and shopping center

In 2002 the city of Herford took over the then vacant building in order to convert it into a modern office and shopping center with almost 8,000 square meters of usable space in connection with the new building of the MARTa Museum. The Elsbachhaus was inaugurated in 2004, one year before the museum opened. Originally the inauguration was supposed to take place at the same time, but the completion of the museum was delayed. Then the neighboring MARTa-Areal car park was built. The construction of a hotel is planned on another neighboring area.

offices

The offices, which are mainly located on the top three floors on an area of 8,000 square meters, are operated by the telephone service provider EWE Tel , Wohn und Wirtschafts-Service GmbH (WWS Herford GmbH), the city marketing company Pro Herford , an advertising agency and a Software company used. In April 2009, Radio Herford also moved into the studios there , which have been located in the multi-storey car park on Berliner Straße since the local radio was founded in 1991.

Shopping mall and restaurant

The shopping center with a floor space of 2,500 square meters on the lower two floors is designed to be open, so that you can switch from one shop to the other without disruptive walls or doors. There are several fashion and clothing stores on 1,000 square meters. The remaining areas include a bookstore, a hairdresser, an optician, a jewelry store, a computer store and a fitness studio. Another open-plan restaurant with an open kitchen and an outdoor area has meanwhile developed into a popular Herford restaurant. Part of the restaurant is a cooking school that offers themed cooking courses on a monthly basis.

In the spacious foyer, temporary concerts, exhibitions, readings, shopping fairs and the like are held on a small scale.

Library

After her marriage (1911) to Adolf Maass, Käthe Elsbach set up an extensive library in Hamburg's Blumenstrasse. At the beginning of National Socialism, the family tried to save the valuable library by sending it to a relative in England. In 1999 a descendant (Gerry Maass) offered the library to the city of Herford. After lengthy negotiations, the library only returned to Herford after the death of Gerry Maass in spring 2010. The Maass heirs donated the library to the Jewish community of Herford-Detmold. The library is now in the Elsbach-Haus as a reminder of the Elsbach / Maass family.
