The Radewiger Feldmark is a part of the Herford district of Herford-Stadt , which corresponds to the city of Herford as it existed until the incorporation of other districts on January 1st, 1969.
location
The Radewiger Feldmark stretches from the Radewig , which is part of the city center, to the former city limits in the north and west of the city.
Accordingly, in the northeast and east of the city of Herford, adjacent to the Neustadt , the Neustädter Feldmark and in the south of the city of Herford, adjacent to the old town , the Altstädter Feldmark .
Since most of the Radewiger Feldmark, seen from the city center, lies beyond the Dortmund – Hanover railway line , this area is often referred to as “behind the railway” or “eighth of the railway”.
Neighboring districts
In the east the Werre is the border river to the Neustädter Feldmark. To the south of it, the Aa forms the border with Neustadt. The city moat adjoining to the south borders the Radewig. In the further course the Aa forms the border to the old town Feldmark again.
In the west, the Radewiger Feldmark borders the Herford districts of Diebrock and Herringhausen . In the north, the Düsedieksbach forms the border with the Hiddenhausen districts of Schweicheln-Bermbeck , Sundern and Oetinghausen .
landscape
The Radewiger Feldmark is largely characterized by residential and commercial buildings. Only outside of the bypass road and in the Aa valley are larger undeveloped, mostly agricultural areas or meadows. In the north lies the Füllenbruch nature reserve , which extends as far as Hiddenhausen. A small, almost circular green area, which is completely surrounded by streets behind the train station, is affectionately known as the “Radewiger Kurpark”.

Otto Hahn School
The oldest secondary school in the city of Herford is located on Uhlandstrasse, which was called Realschule Uhlandstrasse until 1969.
Agricultural College
The Agricultural College, which emerged from an agricultural school and a higher agricultural school, is located on Ravensberger Straße .
Herford Music School
The Herford Music School was rebuilt in 2004 on Goebenstrasse.

Marta district
Marta
The Marta Museum is located on the former premises of Ahlers Goldress . It was built to a design by the architect Frank Gehry , who also designed the Museo Guggenheim in Bilbao , and opened in May 2005. Within the building there are also several German furniture associations and a test laboratory of the Bavarian State Trade Agency .
Elsbachhaus and surroundings
In 2004 and 2005, the unadorned district on Goebenstrasse not far from the train station between Schillerstrasse and Luisenstrasse was completely redesigned. After Deutsche Post had been based in the former buildings of the important but no longer existing Herford textile company Elsbach for about thirty years , the listed core building was restored to today's Elsbachhaus. Smaller outbuildings later built on the site were demolished. In the Elsbachhaus there are almost 8000 square meters of offices, seminar rooms, a restaurant and shopping arcades on two levels. In April 2009 Radio Herford moved from the Neustadt car park to the Elsbachhaus.
The Marta-Areal multi-storey car park with 456 parking spaces was built along the railway line on the site of the former parcel transhipment point. The basement of a former factory building was converted into a restaurant with outdoor catering.
The Käthe-Elsbach-Platz next to the Elsbachhaus has been a reminder of Käthe Elsbach (married Maass) since September 2006. She came from the Jewish industrialist family who ran Europe's largest linen factory in what is now the Elsbachhaus in the 1920s. The Elsbach family was able to emigrate during the Nazi era, while Käthe Maass-Elsbach was deported from her place of residence in Hamburg and murdered in the concentration camp.
Accommodations
An InterCityHotel with 135 rooms is being built between the car park at the Bahn and the Marta Museum . The groundbreaking took place in summer 2018 and the opening is planned for spring 2020, but was postponed to 2021 due to the corona pandemic. In July 2020, another hotel with an attached boarding house with 58 residential units was opened at the corner of Goebenstrasse and Sophienstrasse . It bears the name Go 25 after the address Goebenstrasse 25. In addition, there are so-called assembly rooms in several houses on Goebenstrasse, which are intended in particular for craftsmen who are in the city for a limited period of time. The houses in which the rooms are offered have names such as Villa Marta, Haus Marta, Haus Hansa, Haus Sophie, Haus Werra and Haus Pewo.
Goebenstrasse
Goebenstrasse itself has also been rebuilt. At the intersection of Schillerstraße / Goebenstraße, there is now a roundabout with La Palla in the middle, a stainless steel ball with a diameter of 350 cm made by Luciano Fabro . Luciano Fabro has modeled an excerpt from Rainer Maria Rilke's poem Der Ball on a metal band with 95 centimeter letters over the course of Goebenstrasse from Luisenstrasse to around La Palla .
As part of the renovation of the district, the new building of the Herford Music School was also built in the immediate vicinity.
Goebenstrasse was named after the Prussian general August von Goeben in 1886 . Before that it was called Behmer or Oberbehmer Chaussee.
Sports and leisure facilities
Sports center in the small field
The sports center Im Kleiner Felde with an outdoor swimming pool and an ice rink, which can accommodate 2,000 visitors, is located in the area of a former brick factory .
GoParc and Discotheque X
The city's two largest discos are also located in the Radewiger Feldmark. The GoParc disco is located in the Radewig car park directly at the train station, while the X disco is on Bünder Strasse near the bypass. Live singers and bands perform in both discos. on. The catchment area of the two discos extends to the whole of northern East Westphalia.
Springolino
East Westphalia-Lippe's largest indoor play facility, Springolino, is between Ackerstrasse and Kiebitzstrasse, with an area of 5,000 m². This makes it one of the largest indoor playgrounds in Germany.
Old goods hall
After the freight hall was no longer needed by Deutsche Bahn, the city of Herford bought it. Since then the old goods hall has been used for exhibitions, trade fairs (e.g. Herbstzeitlos), markets, concerts, fashion shows and the like.
FlaFla
The FlaFla youth and culture center in Herford has existed since 1969. After several moves, a building on Diebrocker Straße was bought at the end of 2015, into which Fla Fla moved after the renovation at the end of 2017. Before that, it was on Goebenstrasse for several years.
Churches
St. Paul
The Pauluskirche is on Kiebitzstrasse. It forms a pastoral network with the three other Catholic Herford churches of St. Johannes Baptist on Komturstrasse, Maria Frieden on Lübberlindenweg and St. Josef in Elverdissen .
When refugees and expellees came to Herford after the Second World War, mainly from Silesia, which was partly Catholic, the then only Catholic parish of Herford, St. Johannes Baptist, acquired today's church property in 1947. Two years later she bought the house on the property and converted the sheepfold in the half-timbered house into a chapel. In 1954 the church council decided to build a church. Construction began in 1960 and was consecrated on March 3, 1962 by Auxiliary Bishop Paul Nordhues . The money for a bell was donated in 1967 so that the St. Peter's Bell (940 kg), the St. Mary's Bell (520 kg) and the St. Joseph's Bell (420 kg) could be consecrated on the 1st Sunday of Advent in 1967.
The parish hall was inaugurated in 1978 and the kindergarten was opened in 1994. In 2009 there were around 2,550 members in the community.
Luther House
From 1914 until the beginning of the 21st century , Protestant services were held in the Lutherhaus on Oetinghauser Weg, which belongs to the Münster parish .
Other religious communities
Other Protestant communities are the Evangelical Free Church Community of Herford on Ravensberger Strasse and the Missionswerk der Gemeinde Gottes e. V. on Zimmerstrasse.
The prayer and cultural sites of the Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institute for Religion (DITIB) are located on Bielefelder Straße.
After an Alevi community was founded in Herford in May 2009 , an Alevi community center was opened on Goebenstrasse in November 2010. At that time the community had 210 members.
Lebenshilfe Herford
On Ackerstrasse, Lebenshilfe Herford e. V. has its seat. The non-profit association Lebenshilfe for people with intellectual disabilities Kreisvereinigung Herford e. V. - its full name - has existed since 1963 and has around 300 members (2013) and several non-profit subsidiaries. The two largest are Herford Werkstätten gGmbH and Lebenshilfe Wohnen gGmbH.
The Herford workshops have 630 employees at three locations in Herford and one in Löhne . The largest workshop is the Füllenbruch operation on Ackerstrasse with 300 disabled people and 150 supervisors. 90 disabled people work in the Heidsiek workshop on Lilienthalstrasse and 120 people are employed at the Radewig industrial service on Jöllenbecker Weg.
Lebenshilfe Wohnen operates two dormitories for around 150 people in Herford (Kiebitzstraße, Oetinghauser Weg), one dormitory each in Hiddenhausen and Bad Salzuflen, and four outdoor living groups in Herford (Kiebitzstraße, Wellbrocker Weg, Tribenstraße, Heiko-Plöger-Weg) and one in Bad Salzuflen.
There is also the Finkenbusch dormitory on Wullbrinkholzweg, which belongs to the subsidiary Lebenshilfe Finkenbusch gGmbH. The colorful houses not far from Mindener Strasse were taken over by the anthroposophists . 34 people with different disabilities live there in four groups.
Public facilities
The district administration and the tax office , which is responsible for the cities of Herford, Vlotho , Enger and Spenge as well as the community of Hiddenhausen , are located near the Herford train station . The district military replacement office, which was located next to the tax office, was closed in 2014.
The Wohn und Wirtschafts-Service GmbH (WWS Herford GmbH) , which manages several thousand apartments in the city, has had its headquarters in the Elsbachhaus since September 2010.
The screening center responsible for breast cancer early detection in the Herford district is located on Kurfürstenstrasse .
Sewage treatment plant
In 1913 the city of Herford built its first sewage treatment plant on Goebenstraße between the railway line, the Werre and the bypass road. The sewage treatment plant for the city of Herford and parts of the community of Hiddenhausen is still located there on a relatively small area. After the old sewage treatment plant exceeded the specified wastewater values in the 1980s, a new sewage treatment plant was to be built in the Werre Valley. However, there was considerable resistance, so the city decided to use a technology from France that was completely new in Germany. Only 7,400 m² were required for the system designed for 250,000 population equivalents. For a conventional filing of this size, an area of 31,700 m² had to be available. In addition, the next residential buildings are only 100 m away, so the requirements for low odor and noise emissions were particularly high. It was therefore decided to use the French Biostyr technology , in which the sewage treatment plant could be completely enclosed. The special thing about it is that the water is pressed from bottom to top through a three-meter-high layer of three-millimeter-thick styrofoam balls, which are arranged on two levels ( fixed bed process ). In a conventional system, on the other hand, the water rests in the pre- and post-clarification tank and is enriched with bacteria in the aeration tank, which requires considerably more space. This enabled the facility, which was built in 1993 and completed in 1997, to be completely enclosed.
While the purified water is pumped into the Werre receiving water , the exhaust air is pressed into three reactor towers connected in series, where it is subjected to chemical air scrubbing, whereby the odorous substances are gradually neutralized.
The sewage treatment plant, which went into operation in 1999, is the first of its kind in Germany. The costs amounted to the equivalent of around EUR 58.5 million.
After the sewage treatment plant went into operation, a sludge recycling plant was built on the site.
After its completion, the sewage treatment plant was rented out to an investor in the USA with cross-border leasing and leased back for a period of 25 years. Thanks to the income generated in this way, the wastewater charges could be temporarily reduced. The partner in the USA is Bank of America , and the transaction was hedged through US government bonds. The partner in Germany is the Landesbank Sachsen ( Sachsen-LB ).

Major roads
Many main roads run through the Radewiger Feldmark. In the north and west, the bypass road ( B 61 / B 239 ), which was built in the 1930s, roughly forms the border of the Feldmark.
The arterial roads Goebenstraße, Bünder Straße, Engerstraße, Diebrocker Straße and Bielefelder Straße lead to Kirchlengern , Bünde , Enger , Herford- Diebrock and Bielefeld in a star shape from the city center out of the city via the bypass road . The Wellbrocker Weg and the Oetinghauser Weg are of secondary importance.
The sewage treatment plant, the former bus depot of the Minden-Ravensberg transport company , the former small train station , the Marta district and the music school are located on Goebenstrasse .
The Füllenbruchstrasse leads from the bypass road along the Füllenbruch nature reserve to Hiddenhausen - Oetinghausen .
About halfway between the bypass road and the Radewig, the Westring connects Bielefelder Strasse with Diebrocker Strasse, Engerstrasse, Oetinghauser Weg and Wellbrocker Weg. The sports center Im Kleiner Felde is also located on the Westring .
Parking garages
The Marta-Areal multi-storey car park in the Marta district offers space for 456 parking spaces. The Radewig car park has 444 parking spaces. It is located directly on the Hamm-Minden railway line, near the train station and the district building. A few places are reserved for rail travelers. The GoPark disco is located on the ground floor.

The Herford train station is in the Radewiger Feldmark, which is cut in the east by the Hamm – Minden railway line . The Herford – Himmighausen railway branches off south of the station . The two rail connections to the Herford brewery and the Sulo company have since been terminated.
Originally there was also a track connection to the Herford small railway , whose small station was right next to the embankment. Today, the BKK Herford Minden Ravensberg has its headquarters there. The former bus depot of the Minden-Ravensberg transport company is also located on the site .

The headquarters of Westfalen Weser Energie and the headquarters of the baby food manufacturer Humana GmbH are located on Bielefelder Straße .
The chocolate factory Ludwig Weinrich GmbH & Co. KG is located on Zimmerstrasse / Diebrocker Strasse, which sells chocolate under its own name and produces chocolate for Lidl . In addition, Transfair chocolate is produced for the Gepa Fair trading company and under the name Vivani organic chocolate. Weinrich runs the Bruchbude on Gänsemarkt , a shop that sells broken chocolate and remaining stock directly from the factory.
