Procathedral of St. Paul

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Procathedral of St. Paul is an Anglican pro-cathedral in Valletta , Malta .

Queen Adelheid visited the island after Malta became part of the British Empire in 1814 . Since there was no Anglican church on the island, she had the St. Paul Procathedral built for members of the colonial administration. The foundation stone was laid on March 20, 1839, and the church was completed in 1844. It is built in the classical style. The steeple was the tallest building in Valletta until the dome of the Carmelite Church was built.

St. Paul's is located in Independence Square. The church tower is over 60 m high, the portal is decorated with Ionic columns. The interior is kept simple and permanently hung with flags. The patron saint of the Church is the Apostle Paul , Malta's first missionary. He was shipwrecked in the period 50–60 AD and ended up on the island. The patronage festival is on February 10th.

St. Paul is one of the two pro-cathedrals of the Diocese in Europe (until 1980 Diocese of Gibraltar).

This church is not to be confused with the Catholic co- cathedral St. Johann .
