The Carmelite Church ( Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel , Eng. Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel paints. Santwarju Valley Madonna Valley Karmnu ) is a Roman Catholic church in the capital Valletta on the island of Malta . It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, which includes the entire city of Valletta, and is one of the most famous churches and main tourist attractions of Valletta.

The previous building, which was dedicated to the Patronage of the Annunciation , was built until around 1573 and was at that time the first church in the young city of Valletta. The church was planned by Gerolamo Cassar (approx. 1550–1592), but underwent some changes and additions. In the 17th century it was given to the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and consecrated to the Patronage of Our Lady of Mount Carmel . The facade was redesigned from 1852 under Giuseppe Bonavia. On May 14, 1895, Pope Leo XIII. the church to the rank of minor basilica . After severe damage in World War II, the building was rebuilt between 1958 and 1981; it was enlarged and given a dome . The 42-meter-high oval dome shapes both the city's silhouette and that of the Marsamxett harbor. It is higher than the steeple of the neighboring Anglican Pro-Cathedral of St. Paul's .

The main attraction in the interior is a painting of Our Lady of Mount Carmel from the early 17th century. The interior was designed by the sculptor Joseph Damato over 19 years. The red marble columns are also striking.
