Eickum was first mentioned in 1151 as Ehchem . Until December 31, 1968 Eickum belonged to the office of Herford-Hiddenhausen in the Herford district . On January 1, 1969, it was incorporated into the then independent city of Herford, which in turn was incorporated into the Herford district.

The first school in Eickum was built in 1755. Before that, the students went to the school in Hollinde, which belongs to Diebrock. In 1825 a new school building was built and in October 1907 the current school was moved into on Stedefreunder Straße. On August 1, 1968, the elementary school became the Eickum elementary school. Next to the school is the Herford-Eickum day-care center, which is operated by the AWO .

The Eickum cemetery is located at the intersection of Diebrocker and Stedefreunder Straße. While the old part is north of Diebrocker Straße, the cemetery facilities with chapel and parking lot are on the new part south of Diebrocker Straße. There are electoral, row and care row graves there.

The actor and singer Gustav Peter Wöhler , who was born in Bielefeld, lived as a child with his parents in Eickum. He went to school in Herford.
