history

Hilligenböke memorial stone

Schwarzenmoor was first mentioned after 1300. It belonged to the Vlotho district as part of the Exter peasantry until 1811, when it came to the canton of Herford. Until December 31, 1968 Schwarzenmoor belonged to the office of Herford-Hiddenhausen in the Herford district . On January 1, 1969, it was incorporated into the then independent city of Herford, which in turn was incorporated into the Herford district.

At the corner of Alte Heerstraße / Hilligenböke there is a memorial for Saint Lebuin , who, according to legend , is said to have bravely preached the Gospel at the old Saxon tribal meeting in Marklo in 772 . This brought the Saxons against him, they wanted to kill him. The beech is said to have stood here, opening to protect the fleeing Lebuin and hiding him. A new beech next to the memorial stone was last planted in 2006 after the tree planted by a farmer in 1934 was destroyed in a thunderstorm.
