Elverdissen is the southernmost and second largest district in terms of inhabitants in the district town of Herford in the administrative district of Detmold in North Rhine-Westphalia . On December 31, 2015, it had 4,158 inhabitants. Only the core city of Herford-Stadt has more inhabitants.

geography

Geographical location

A plateau stretches from the Lipper Bergland in the southeast over the municipality to the northwest. It is 110 meters high and drops to 65 meters to the Aa in the west . The foot of the plateau is in the west and south by several Sieke divided, which rivers flow as Quersieke into two broad Längssieke and watercourses.

Districts

Within Elverdissen there are the districts Hillewalsen, Hillewalserbaum and Herford Heath in the north, Helle in the south and Elsen and Brake II in the west.

Expansion of the municipal area

The total area of Elverdissen is 9.31 km². The largest extension in north-south direction is about 4.5 kilometers and in east-west direction about 3.5 kilometers.

Neighboring communities

In the north, Elverdissen borders on the old town of Herford. In the east lie the districts of Biemsen-Ahmsen and Lockhausen of the city of Bad Salzuflen . The Bielefeld districts of Altenhagen and Milse are located south of Elverdissen. Bielefeld- Brake and the Herford districts of Stedefreund and Diebrock join in the west, with the Aa forming the border.

geology

A clear dichotomy can be seen in the soil structure. In the west, sand and gravel lie under a 30 centimeter thick layer of clay , which has a very favorable effect on agriculture. That is why the oldest arable fields can also be found here. To the east of Elsen and Hillewalsen, pure sand three meters thick was exploited for construction purposes directly under the clay cover. In the past, sand pits were located next to the current cemetery area. The entire surface of the eastern part of the community consists of a loess clay cover .

history

The Elverdissen area was first mentioned in a document in 1151. Bishop Bernhard I von Paderborn named the place Hildewalessen, a later spelling is Hildewoleshusen. Both designate the Hillewalsen farmers, which consisted of three farms that were taxable at Herford Abbey. The name Elverdissen first appeared in 1160. Here the place is called Elffliste, which can almost certainly be traced back to the words Elff (river, probably meant the Aa) and liste ( lithe , which means a slope). 1274 Elfliste and 1496 Elverdissen are used as spelling. Old records from the Herford Abbey and Schildesche Abbey from the 16th century show that there were four nest settlements in the Elverdissen area: Pauenhusen, Hillewalsen, Elsen and Helle. The name Pauenhusen was mentioned in 974 in a letter from Emperor Otto .

Until December 31, 1968 Elverdissen belonged to the office of Herford-Hiddenhausen in the Herford district . On January 1, 1969, it was incorporated into the then independent city of Herford, which in turn was incorporated into the Herford district.

religion

The ratio of Catholics to Protestants in Elverdissen is about 1:10.

Friedenskirche

Evangelical Peace Church

In 1914 the Protestant Peace Church on Braker Strasse was inaugurated. It is interesting to note that the church window in the central nave bears the inscription “Built in the year of war and peace 1914”, since the consecration of the church was based on the assumption that the war would be won within a few months and that the church was to be dedicated to this victory as a precaution . It was built in the late Art Nouveau style and is a listed building. The German church in Gardone on Lake Garda served as a template . There are three bells in the tower. The middle one reads “God with us”, the big bell bears the slogan “O land, land, hear the word of the Lord”.

The interior offers space for 450 people. Because of the two existing galleries, the pulpit stands on a high plinth. In the front of the pulpit there is an angel with the ten commandments and the inscription "Blessed are those who hear God's word and keep it". On the sides the apostles Peter are depicted with a key and Paul with a sword. The risen Jesus is depicted on the window in the front of the chancel, the two windows to the left show the reformers Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon . To the right below and above the side gallery are six windows, the middle one above with a small round image of a dove with an olive branch over a rainbow. It is the pictorial representation of the church built in the First World War.

Until 1957, Elverdissen and the Friedenskirche were a parish of the Herford Münster parish , since then it has formed its own parish . Pastor Dieter Beckmann retired after 36 years of service in the congregation on October 4, 2009 with a divine service. On December 1st, 2009 his successor, Michael Große, started his ministry.

St. Joseph Church

In 1957 the Catholic St. Josef Church was built on Durlacher Weg. It is a branch church of St. Johannes Baptist , which forms a pastoral alliance with the other Catholic churches in Herford, Maria Frieden and St. Paulus .

Right from the start there is a three-meter diving platform and a children's slide. In 1969 a heat pump was installed to heat the water . When the pool was about to be closed in the 1990s, an outdoor pool association was founded in 1996, which has supported the pool's maintenance financially and on a voluntary basis ever since. In 2007 the bathroom was renovated by the operator, Stadtwerke Herford , for 1.5 million euros. Today the water is heated to 24.5 degrees by a mobile combined heat and power unit . On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, a children's slide was put into operation in 2014.

They are responsible for around 2,800 farmers in the Herford and Lippe districts and in the city of Bielefeld.
