history

The name Stiftberg goes back to the Damen-Stift auf dem Berge , a daughter monastery of the Herford prince abbey , which was located in the area of the Marienkirche until the secularization of 1803.

For centuries, between the founding of the monastery in 1011 and the secularization, St. Mary's Church lay in the middle of fields and meadows, where it was only surrounded by a few farmsteads. In the area of today's Stadtpark Schützenhof , below the Langenberg and between Stadtholzstrasse and Vlothoer Strasse, there were clay pits.

Since the middle of the 19th century, the village character of the area was increasingly canceled by "bourgeois" development. The barracks on both sides of Vlothoer Straße were built from October 1934.

On both sides of the road were Vlothoer with the former Hammersmith and Wentworthkaserne two barracks in which the British forces in Germany to the headquarters of the British 1st Armored Division ( 1st Armored Division stationed) to the end, 2015. From there the British troops in Germany and around the world were commanded. The 1st Panzer Division was the only ground troop unit of the United Kingdom operating worldwide outside the British Isles. The division conference center with a British cinema and the “Lister School” elementary school were located on the barracks site. From October 22, 1990 to July 31, 2009, the German headquarters of the British soldiers station British Forces Broadcasting Service was also located there .

In order to set up part of their headquarters, the British occupiers ordered them to evacuate several hundred houses on Stiftberg in four days within four days. They were only allowed to take food, clothes and duvets with them to makeshift accommodations. At the end of 1945, 6,517 residents were evicted from 1,050 apartments in Herford. It was not until 1957 that the last houses came back into German ownership.
