history

Historical logo

The group, which has appeared as the Ahlers Group in recent years, was founded in 1919 as a cloth wholesaler by Adolf Ahlers in Jever . After moving to Oldenburg iO in 1925, a production facility was opened in Herford-Elverdissen in 1932 and the headquarters were relocated there. In 1936, a linen factory was built in Herford. During the time of the so-called "Aryanizations" in 1938, Adolf Ahlers took over the operation of the then largest textile company in Europe, Elsbach in Herford. The Jewish Elsbach family was forced to sell the shares in their company to Ahlers. The company was renamed by Ahlers as "Herford Laundry Factory AG". The former managing director Kurt Elsbach, who fled abroad, returned to the company in 1947, but died in 1954. From 1952 onwards, the company was called "Elsbach Linen Factory" again. The shares were returned to the Elsbach family. Ahlers remained a shareholder, acquired the company completely in 1964 and converted it into a GmbH. Jan A. Ahlers , son of the company founder, took over management from his father Adolf Ahlers in 1968 and expanded the company into an internationally active group. In 1979 an own production facility was outsourced to Sri Lanka . In 1987 Jan A. Ahlers brought the company to the stock exchange. Stella A. Ahlers, the founder's granddaughter, has been running the company since 2005.
