Westerenger is a district of the city of Enger in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia in the Herford district . The district borders the city of Spenge in the west and has 3,790 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2007). For years there has been a sustained population growth due to the designation of new residential areas.

history

Westerenger was first mentioned in writing in 1151 as WesterEngere .

On January 1, 1969, Westerenger was incorporated into Enger.

Public facilities

fire Department

Westerenger is the location of the Westerenger fire fighting group, which is organizationally subordinate to the Enger volunteer fire brigade . It was founded on May 16, 1889 in a local barn. The syringe house was built in 1929 and still exists today. In 2006, however, the fire brigade moved to a new fire station on Westerengerstrasse on the grounds of the Heideschule.

There is a school in Westerenger: the Westerenger elementary school, which is run as an open all-day school.

Until 2016 there was also the Heideschule in Westerenger, a special needs school with a focus on learning. The school was closed at the end of the 2015/16 school year.

The two schools were housed in the same building complex and shared a schoolyard, a sports field and a playground.

Club life

In Westerenger, the local associations are organized in the "Working Group of Westerenger Associations". For example, a joint delegation takes part in commemoration ceremonies or a Santa Claus market is organized.

Music clubs

There are three music associations based in Westerenger: the Evangelical Trombone Choir Westerenger-Dreyen (see article entry Dreyen ), the children's choir “Kleines Lied”, from which the older singers have now joined together to form the TeensTones youth choir , and the Westerenger singing community.

Cultural associations agricultural machinery

Two groups are active in Westerenger that have taken on historical agricultural machinery. The Holderfreunde Westerenger have been active since 2004 and are based in Klausheide. There is also the Dieselfreunde Enger association, which is part of the association of associations in Westerenger.

The Evangelical Church in Westerenger is the largest building in the town. A parish hall was built as an extension. The kindergarten building on Spenger Straße has a small tower and a clock tower, the facade is built in a half-timbered style.

Monuments and memorial stones

In the village there is a memorial stone from 1933, which reminds of the first mention of Westerenger in 1103.

religion

In Westerenger, 45 percent of the population are Protestant, 21 percent Catholic, five percent profess Islam, and 29 percent are non-denominational. The only visible active parish (church and parish hall) is the Protestant parish Westerenger.

Companies

The Sparkasse Herford is the only bank in the area. A branch of Volksbank Bad Oeynhausen-Herford was closed in 2016.

The Wehmeyer printing company has existed in Klausheide since 1959.

traffic

The place is connected to the local public transport by bus lines 464, 465 and 466. They connect Westerenger with, among others, Hücker-Aschen , the neighboring town of Spenge, the town center of Enger, Herringhausen or Oetinghausen and Lippinghausen and the district town of Herford . District road 20 also runs through the village.
