The power station Minden Ravensberg GmbH (EMR) with headquarters in Herford was a power company and was founded in 1909 in East Westphalia established. As a regional electricity supplier, it supplied the Herford district , the former Minden district in northern East Westphalia and Schaumburg-Lippe as well as other parts of the neighboring Lower Saxony with energy and operated a traffic department. In 2003 it merged with two other companies ( Elektrizitätswerk Wesertal GmbH, Hameln, and PESAG , Paderborn) to form E.ON Westfalen Weser AG .

history

In 1907, Franz von Borries , the Herford District Administrator, started thinking about building an overland power station. He found support from Minden District Administrator Franz Cornelsen , who were jointly convinced that electricity would be the most important energy source of the future. On March 4, 1909, the "Elektrizitätswerk Minden-Ravensberg GmbH" was founded with a share capital of 1.5 million marks. The purpose of the joint venture was the generation and utilization of electrical energy and the delivery of electricity without any intermediate trade to the last point of consumption. Since there were only municipal holdings, all the municipalities that owned streets and lanes were involved, which acted as a non-profit association under public law, but with a clear commitment to the commercial management.

In Kirchlengern was 1910 coal-fired power plant Kirchlengern with two blocks of 1000 and 700 kilowatts built, the phase current with a voltage charges of 6,000 volts. The then 110 kilometer long network brought the three-phase current generated by the power plant to the consumers, whereby the electricity was previously transformed into power current (380 volts) and luminous current of 220 volts in transformers and switching stations . The number of connections rose sharply as a result, so that in 1912 a third 1000 kW block was built at the Kirchlengern power plant.

The supply area expanded with the accession of the state of Schaumburg-Lippe , which, however, got into financial distress in 1931 after bad speculation. The EMR then took over the capital stake of the country in order to prevent the entry of foreign shareholders.

In 1952 EMR merged with the neighboring municipal power suppliers Wesertal and Stadtwerke Bielefeld ; they founded the Interargem interest group and working group. In the same year, they built up the joint Weser power station based on hard coal in Veltheim near Vlotho . It initially had an output of 550 kW and was partially expanded step by step through political pressure (300 MW - decree of the Federal Ministry of Economics from 1964). The power plant was shut down in March 2015.

From 1970, the EMR got involved in nuclear power plant technology through associated companies and helped build the THTR-300 nuclear power plants in Hamm ( Schmehausen district ) on the Lippe and in Grohnde on the Weser . The first was finally shut down in 1989 after five years of operation, the Grohnde nuclear power plant still produces electricity for EMR and for the successor company E.ON Westfalen Weser.

Kirchlengern power plant

From the 1990s, the first regenerative energy systems came to EMR, such as the first wind turbines in the Herford region, solar systems and a much-noticed waste heat utilization .

In 1998, EMR founded the telecommunications company Teleos.

The EMR tried to expand the business field and also offered its services in the areas of traffic, waste disposal, gas / water, telecommunications and engineering .

In 2002, in preparation for the merger with E.ON, the entire shares in Stadtwerke Minden were taken over.

EMR Motor Transport Department

The EMR road transport operated from 1926 in a part of eastern Westphalia to public transport . He was the operator of the Herford small railway , whose route was electrified in the early 1930s. The last section of this line was shut down in 1966. In 1914, the "Straßenbahn Minden GmbH" was founded as a subsidiary of the Minden-Ravensberg electricity company. From 1928 to the end of 1959, EMR Kraftverkehr operated the Minden tram , and finally also the Minden trolleybus between 1953 and 1965 . The intercity bus supplied in the districts of Minden-Lübbecke and Herford mainly routes between Herford , Spenge , Bad Oeynhausen , Vlotho , Hille and Minden . There were also city lines in the larger cities.

On January 1, 1982, Verkehrsbetriebe Minden-Ravensberg GmbH (VMR) was founded as a subsidiary of EMR, in which EMR held 61 percent and the cities of Minden and Herford together held 39 percent. VMR GmbH was sold to üstra Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe and intalliance AG in January 2002 . She then sold this to Rhenus Veniro GmbH & Co. KG in 2008 . For economic reasons it was decided in summer 2010 to shut down VMR GmbH on June 30, 2011. The VMR no longer took part in the re-tendering of the bus networks in the region.

fusion

On October 1, 2003, the merger of the three electricity suppliers PESAG AG ( Paderborn ), Elektrizitätswerk Minden-Ravensberg GmbH (Herford) and Elektrizitätswerk Wesertal GmbH ( Hameln ) in the successor company E.ON Westfalen Weser .

Remunicipalisation

In the middle of the first decade of the 21st century, the concession agreements between EON-Westphalia and the municipalities expire and have to be extended. Therefore, under the new aspects of "renewable energies", "local grids" and, last but not least, "profits from well-managed electricity companies", many municipalities are considering remunicipalising the parts in their area . Stadtwerke Porta Westfalica is considering buying the power grid again. There are discussions with the neighboring communities of Herford and Bünde in order to establish a joint small EMR. Some time ago it became known that the city of Minden was also considering re-establishing its Minden municipal utility and taking over the power grids again.

Company health insurance

The company health insurance fund EMR (Elektrizitätswerk Minden-Ravensberg GmbH) was founded in 1914 for the employees. This continues to exist after a merger with the Herford district's company health insurance fund under the name of BKK Herford Minden Ravensberg .
