The E.ON Westfalen Weser AG belonged mainly to the E.ON group (around 63% of the shares) and indirectly or directly to 37 communities across the state of the company (around 37% of the shares). history
The energy supply company was created on October 1, 2003 through the takeover and merger of the regional supply companies:
- Minden-Ravensberg electricity works (EMR), Herford
- Paderborner Elektrizitätswerke und Straßenbahn AG (PESAG), Paderborn and
- Wesertal power station , Hameln.
The sales business was transferred to E.ON Westfalen Weser Vertrieb GmbH on September 1, 2008 due to legal requirements. The turnover in 2008 was around 578.4 million euros, generated by 1,112 employees. In 2011, 1,006 people were employed with a turnover of 671.3 million euros. In January 2012, the E.ON Group announced that it was separating from its regional subsidiary E.ON Westfalen-Weser. The former municipal businesses are to be municipalized again. At the beginning of November 2012, the participating municipalities received an offer to buy the grid company for 440 million euros. The company's own sales company had previously been sold to the E.ON Group for EUR 216 million.
On June 26, 2013 E.ON announced that it had sold its 63 percent stake to a consortium of buyers consisting of 48 municipalities led by Paderborn and Herford. E.ON Westfalen Weser Vertrieb GmbH will continue to take over the electricity and gas sales business as well as other holdings of the company . This company remains the so-called basic supplier . The new municipal company only takes care of the electricity, gas and water networks. The total volume of the transaction was around 600 million euros, of which the energy company E.ON will receive a total of 360 million euros.
At the founding meeting of the municipal energy supplier Westfalen Weser Energie GmbH & Co. KG (WWE) on July 19, 2013, E.ON Westfalen Weser with around 900 employees was taken over as the successor company and for remunicipalisation . The business areas are network operation and decentralized generation of renewable energy. 48 municipalities from East Westphalia-Lippe and southern Lower Saxony have a stake in the new energy supplier WWE, including the city of Paderborn with 22.3 percent, the city of Herford with 21.3 percent and the city of Minden with 6.59 percent as the largest shareholders. Michael Heidkamp is the managing director.
The subsidiary Westfalen Weser Netz of the new owner also takes over the 6.58% of the climate protection agency Weserbergland gGmbH . Other shareholders include the Holzminden district with 27.63% and its own development association with 10.53%.

The core business was the generation and transport of electricity , natural gas , water and heat . The supply area includes parts of East Westphalia-Lippe and southern Lower Saxony . E.ON Westfalen Weser was embedded in a branched group structure. The parent company was E.ON Energie AG , which in turn is majority owned by the group holding company E.ON SE . E.ON's shareholder structure is mostly in free float, the largest shareholders are the asset management and institutional investment company BlackRock , as well as the Norwegian state energy supplier Statkraft , each with just under 5%.
The numerous subsidiaries of E.ON Westfalen Weser included u. a. Participation in eight municipal and municipal utilities of cities in the supply area from 1.1% to 45%, Abfallwirtschaftsgesellschaft Höxter mbH (49%), majority interests in local heating supply companies, Kraftverkehrsgesellschaft Paderborn mbH (100%). In total, the company was directly involved in 15 other companies and numerous other companies indirectly. Of the direct holdings, four are full subsidiaries, and the company was involved in three companies with blocking minorities. Until the end of 2012, E.ON Westfalen-Weser Vertrieb GmbH was a full subsidiary of the company, but was sold to the parent company E.ON before it was taken over by Westfalen Weser Energie GmbH & Co.
