The sales business was transferred to E.ON Westfalen Weser Vertrieb GmbH on September 1, 2008 due to legal requirements. The turnover in 2008 was around 578.4 million euros, generated by 1,112 employees. In 2011, 1,006 people were employed with a turnover of 671.3 million euros. In January 2012, the E.ON Group announced that it was separating from its regional subsidiary E.ON Westfalen-Weser. The former municipal businesses are to be municipalized again. At the beginning of November 2012, the participating municipalities received an offer to buy the grid company for 440 million euros. The company's own sales company had previously been sold to the E.ON Group for EUR 216 million.

On June 26, 2013 E.ON announced that it had sold its 63 percent stake to a consortium of buyers consisting of 48 municipalities led by Paderborn and Herford. E.ON Westfalen Weser Vertrieb GmbH will continue to take over the electricity and gas sales business as well as other holdings of the company . This company remains the so-called basic supplier . At the founding meeting of the municipal energy supplier Westfalen Weser Energie GmbH & Co.
