Westfalen Weser Energie was created in July 2013 after the sale of E.ON Energie's shares in E.ON Westfalen Weser to municipalities and districts in East Westphalia-Lippe and the Weser Uplands .
Together with the energy supply company EWE , based in Oldenburg and Rheinenergie , based in Cologne, the takeover of GWAdriga GmbH & Co. KG in Berlin, a full-service provider for gateway administration and measurement data management, took place in May 2016. Westfalen Weser Energie has a 21 percent stake in GWAdriga.

Business areas and subsidiaries
Westphalia Weser Network (WWN)
The subsidiary Westfalen Weser Netz in Paderborn operates regional distribution networks for electricity, natural gas and water. The central task is to provide the electricity and natural gas network for industry, commerce, agriculture and households. The network supply area extends (with around 6400 km²) over two federal states in the regions of Ostwestfalen-Lippe, southern Lower Saxony and northern Sauerland . The electricity network is 30,165 kilometers long and supplies around 683,000 customers in 2017, the natural gas network is 3,311 kilometers long and supplies around 74,000 network customers and the drinking water pipeline system 1,422 kilometers for 40,631 network customers. These systems, which are branched out in the region, are controlled and regulated from the modern control center in Bad Oeynhausen . Westfalen Weser Netz is divided into six regional areas, which are responsible for everything from network planning to the construction and operation of the systems. In Paderborn and three other communities, Westfalen Weser Netz is involved in wastewater disposal.
Energieservice Westfalen Weser (ESW)
The subsidiary Energieservice Westfalen Weser in Kirchlengern provides heat for private households, municipal properties and commercial operations and develops individual supply concepts for them. Contracting is a core business .
Energieservice Westfalen Weser operates the Kirchlengern power plant and has a majority stake in Naturgas Emmerthal GmbH in Emmerthal , Nahwärme Bad Oeynhausen-Löhne GmbH, based in Bad Oeynhausen, and the company for rational energy use Horn-Bad Meinberg mbH (GRE).
Westfalen Weser Participations (WWB)
In the subsidiary Westfalen Weser Beteiligungen GmbH, new investments are bundled alongside the existing holdings. The new company of the Westfalen Weser Energie Group bundles all services, existing and future investments and invests in attractive energy investments.
These include majority stakes in AWP GmbH in Paderborn, in EPOS Bioenergie in Herford as well as stakes in Stadtwerke Lage, in WPG Westfälische Propan-GmbH in Detmold , Blomberger Vertriebsbetriebe GmbH (BVB) and in Wasser GmbH Salzhemmendorf (WGS).
