About this picture

Hille  [ ˈhɪl̩ə ] is a municipality in the district of Minden-Lübbecke in the north of East Westphalia with around 16,000 inhabitants. It was formed in 1973 as part of the municipal reorganization of North Rhine-Westphalia through the merger of nine municipalities of the Mindener Land . It is named after the village of Hille . The municipal area is 102.99 km² and includes the flatland of the North German Plain with the lowest point at 45.7 m, the part rising to the Wiehengebirge at the southern edge with a height of up to 251 meters.

During the Holy Roman Empire , the area of the community belonged to the diocese of Minden and was shaped by the local lords. In 1648 the diocese was secularized and fell under the name " Principality of Minden " to Brandenburg-Prussia .

At the beginning of the 20th century Hille was connected to the Mindener Kreisbahnen , a little later, from 1911 to 1915, the Mittelland Canal was dug through the boggy landscape in front of the Wiehen Mountains and a harbor was set up in Hille . After the Second World War , many refugees settled here and the population increased noticeably.

The economy is still strongly influenced by agriculture , but there are now a variety of industrial and craft production, trading and service companies.

geography

Geographical location

The topography of the municipality of Hille

Hille is located in the northeast of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and on the northern border of the administrative district of Detmold . Located in the center of the Mindener Land , the municipality borders with its northern border on the neighboring state of Lower Saxony . Large parts of the municipality belong to the North German Plain .

Hille has a share in the natural areas Wiehengebirge , Lübbecker Lößland , Bastau Niederung and Rahden-Diepenauer Geest . The southern part, the Rothenuffelner Loesshang, is located in the transition zone from the North German lowlands to the low mountain range . The comb-like structure of the Wiehengebirge closes the municipality of Hille in a kind of bar from the Ravensberger hill country to the south .

The main part of the community is already part of the lowland, which gets its special character from the terminal moraine landscape formed during the Saale Ice Age . In the area of the Endsanders peat bogs could form which are drained towards the Weser. The rest of the area is now known as the Great Peat Bog . In earlier times the moor continued eastward into the Minden area. Centuries of peat mining led to the conversion into the Bastauwiesen, an important wetland biotope that has been designated as a nature reserve since 1980 .

The area is divided into two rivers: the water from the northern slope of the Wiehengebirge is collected by the Bastau , which drains the area to the east and flows into the Weser at Minden. The Ösper , which rises in the northern part of Hille, flows northeast and flows into the Weser at Petershagen.

The municipality of Hille is traversed in the northern part of the Bastauniederung by the Mittelland Canal , which runs from east to west . The Hartumer loess plate to the north is more densely populated and used intensively for agriculture. In the far north of the municipality, in the border area to the city of Petershagen, lies the nature reserve Mindener Wald , a state forest that was owned by the diocese of Minden for a long time.

In the west, this landscape formed by the Ice Age continues into the Osnabrück region. The loose agricultural landscape is characterized by a network of scattered settlements and individual farms, which are structured by courtyard trees and hedges. On the heights of the Wiehengebirge as well as in the north there are forests, in lowlands and on moorland meadows.

geology

Geothermal map of Hille

The municipality is mainly characterized by the periglacial and postglacial deformation processes during and after the Saale freezing . When the area was still covered by ice, the water flowed mainly to the south, opposite to today's drainage direction. It collected in a river landscape north of the Wiehengebirge, only to head west towards the sea. In this glacial valley, extensive moors developed, which for a long time were difficult for people to cross.

With a few unsuitable locations, Hille is moderately to good, very good on slopes and ridges, for the use of geothermal heat sources by means of geothermal probes and heat recovery through heat pump heating (see the adjacent map).

ground

Due to the above-mentioned glacial conditions, the municipality Hille has different fertile soil with different effects on the settlement structure. In the south in the region between Wiehengebirge and Bastauniederung there is fertile soil on high areas , also known as Lübbecker Loessland . The settlements of Rothenuffeln, the two villages Oberlübbe and Unterlübbe and Eickhorst have formed here. To the north of this is the boggy bastion lowland, in which no significant agriculture can be practiced. For this reason, the line of the Mittelland Canal is laid along the lines of the Mittelland Canal in the northern area of the moorland in front of the Wiehen Mountains. The ground is level here. To the north-east of this is the Hartumer loess plate , where there are good arable farming opportunities. This is why the villages of Hartum, Nord- and Südhemmern and Holzhausen II are found here. The farms in the villages are medium-sized, and agricultural businesses of 100 acres are not uncommon. This loess area continues in the west behind the Flöthe river, here the village of Hille is the center of settlement activity. In the northeast of the municipality of Hille there is poor soil around Wittloge, cultivation there only allows forest cultivation (Mindener Wald).

fauna

The white stork occurs in the area of the municipality of Hille, and the resettlement and maintenance of the stock is supported.

Expansion and use of the municipal area

The community Hille, classified as a "large rural community", is located in the North German Plain , in the south it rises to the ridge of the Wiehengebirge . The highest point there is the Lübber Berg in the village of Oberlübbe at 251  m above sea level. NN , in the lowlands the lowest point in the moor is in the village of Hartum at 47.7  m above sea level. NN . Hille extends from east to west over 11.8 km, from north to south over 15.4 km.

Neighboring municipalities

Hille is located in the center of the Minden-Lübbecke district in the north-eastern border area of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony . Except for the state border in the north, Hille is therefore surrounded by municipalities in this district. In detail, these are the historically formative, old bishopric and district town of Minden in the east, Petershagen joins to the northeast, and the Lower Saxon community of Uchte in the north . To the west of Hille are the town of Espelkamp and the former district town of Lübbecke , to the south behind the Wiehengebirge in the Ravensberger Hügelland the community of Hüllhorst and the town of Bad Oeynhausen .

Historically, the area is still oriented towards the old district towns of Minden and Lübbecke, but this does not apply to the towns of Espelkamp and Petershagen, which were also created as part of the municipal reorganization.

Community structure

Districts of the community Hille

According to Section 3 (1) of its main statute, the municipality of Hille is divided into the following nine localities, which were independent municipalities before 1973 and belonged to the dissolved offices of Dützen and Hartum :

history

Hille is characterized by its agricultural structure up to the present day. In addition to the large farms, which arose mainly on the Hartumer loess plate due to the fertile loess soil, there were many small hireling establishments well into the 19th century , the owners of which earned extra income from manual work such as linen weaving and cigar making, which in the 19th century in Hille. In the 19th century in particular, however, many people from today's Hiller parish emigrated to the USA . The destination was often New York and here in the wider area Schenectady . Other Hillers went as so-called Holland walkers on foot to the Netherlands to mow grass there. Some Hillers stayed there forever.

Grave of Carl von Schlotheim at the Bergkirchen Pass, road builder

In the middle of the 19th century, the infrastructure was expanded through a large road construction program by the Minden district administrator, Carl von Schlotheim . This was also to be seen as a job creation measure that helped the district to an economic upswing.

The railroad reached this rural area in the early 20th century. In 1903 the Mindener Kreisbahnen opened a narrow-gauge line from Minden to Eickhorst. In 1907 this small train was extended to Lübbecke. The railway was later switched to standard gauge . The task of this Prussian branch line as an amelioration line was to develop the agricultural areas: delivery of artificial fertilizers, transport of agricultural products to the district towns of Minden and Lübbecke and from there to other towns via the state railways there. The construction of the Mindener Kreisbahnen was also a well-organized job creation measure, thousands of workers received wages and bread from the route construction. The Lübbecke – Hille section was closed in 1967 and then dismantled. Freight traffic still takes place between Hille (port) and Minden. Oberlübbe also had a connection to a small railway from 1897 to 1937. The " Wallücker Willem " connected the quarry near Wallücke in the Wiehengebirge to the south with Löhne and Kirchlengern and transported people as well as iron ore .

For a long time, almost all Hillern people spoke of Platt , which can show major differences from part of the community to the other. Nowadays the use of this language is in decline.

Religions

Old rectory in Hille-Dorf

Like the city of Minden, all villages in the Hille community became Evangelical Lutheran in 1550 with the introduction of the Reformation . The parishes are designed accordingly to this day. When the area fell to Prussia, the regional church was combined to form the Evangelical Church of Westphalia , which later developed into the United Churches, thus uniting the Lutheran and Reformed faiths. The parishes have now partially merged, a parish covers the area of several villages. Part of the old church building has been given up and replaced by new buildings, e.g. B. the old rectory in Hille.

When the refugees from the Second World War were accepted, Catholic parishes were founded, which slowly changed the religious landscape towards multiple beliefs. The only Catholic church in the community is located in the center of the village (Brennhorster Strasse) and is now part of the Mindener Land pastoral network.

Incorporations

Kurpark in Rothenuffeln

The large community of Hille was created on January 1, 1973 as part of the implementation of the Bielefeld Act as part of the North Rhine-Westphalian municipal reform. The previously independent communities of Eickhorst, Hartum, Hille, Holzhausen II, Nordhemmern and Südhemmern from the Hartum office and Oberlübbe, Rothenuffeln and Unterlübbe from the Dützen office in the old district of Minden were merged. In the eastern edge areas, parts of the communities Hartum and Holzhausen II were given to the city of Minden, in return, some parcels of the community Hahlen were incorporated into the community Hille. The offices of Hartum and Dützen were dissolved; the Hille community is the legal successor to the Hartum office. The old office building Hartum, which is very decentralized in the newly formed municipality, was designated as the town hall.

The windmill blades come from the coat of arms of the former Hartum office , in whose area there were numerous windmills and are still there today. The moor pistons come from the coat of arms of the village Hille , in whose area the Hiller Moor is located; the use of this bog by digging peat used to be important for the economic life of the community. The combination of red and silver wants to remind of the centuries-old affiliation of the area to the prince-bishopric of Minden .

The Hille community was granted the right to use a coat of arms , a flag and a seal with a certificate from the District President in Detmold dated November 17, 1981 . (Main statute § 2)

Community partnerships

The Hille community does not maintain its own community partnerships, but participates in the partnership programs of the Minden-Lübbecke district.

Culture and sights

Windmills

Hille is an important part of the Westphalian Mill Road in the mill district of Minden-Lübbecke. Five copies of the so-called Dutch windmill are in the community. The Hartum windmill has been gutted and converted into a holiday home. The still standing windmills in Hille and Nordhemmern are inoperable, they are partly used as a central event location by clubs. The post mill in Westerfeld, "Kreugers Müoln", was demolished after storm damage in the 1940s. At its location, on Mühlenstrasse, is the only modern production mill in the Hille community, the medium-sized feed company Heinrich Meier GmbH & Co. KG, which has been run there since 1897. The Eickhorst windmill , known as Storck's Mühle, is operated by a group of mills and is open every third or fourth Saturday during the season. There is also a water mill in Eickhorst, the water wheel of which is still functional. The associated building was converted into a residential building. The Südhemmern windmill has been expanded as a mill ensemble with a miller's house and village community center. The mill is open every second and fourth Sunday of the month; However, since there is no longer a miller there, the mill may no longer be operated. The Mindener Schifffahrtsgesellschaft offers a combined ticket with a ship on the Mittelland Canal and the museum railway to the South Hemmeran windmill.

theatre

In the rural region there is no theater building of its own, but theater plays are performed irregularly in the assembly hall of the Hille school. The next larger theaters are in Minden, Lübbecke and Espelkamp. Two amateur theaters have established themselves in the neighborhood of the community in the Wiehengebirge, the Nettelstedt open-air theater and the Porta open-air theater .

Museums

The Heimathaus Hartum shows life and work in the "good old days" in a half-timbered house from 1872. The old, former official prison is also in Hartum. What is remarkable about this building is that it has always had a double function: Part of the building was set up as a fire station. In Holzhausen II there is a handicraft museum next to the historic village smithy. There is also the Moorgalerie in Eickhorst, in which a photo exhibition on the Great Peat Bog can be found. In the Hille district, alcohol was produced in the former Christian Meyer distillery (founded in 1721) until 1990. The old distillery building with boiler house and chimney has been a listed building since 1995. The Heimat- und Gartenbauverein Hille eV has been running a distillery museum in the industrial monument since 2002. The production process can be traced from the grain floor to the customs cellar, as almost all the equipment is still there; Particularly noteworthy is the raw fire tower from 1880 and the steam engine from 1895. Today the boiler house is also used as a cultural site for readings and presentations. A small local history museum with old household appliances has been set up on the Kornboden. There is a stork's nest on the 22 meter high chimney. White storks have been breeding here regularly since 2003.

Buildings

Reimler's court

In addition to the windmills in some districts, there is a village church in every village, which is built in the style of the area from field stones, baked bricks and wooden structures.

The old Meyer distillery , a former grain distillery , is located in the village of Hille . A stork's nest was set up on her chimney. Also in Hille is the old von Oeynhausen aristocratic seat, better known today as Reimler's court.

Hiller Church dates from 1523 and became an Evangelical Lutheran Church during the Reformation . In the course of time it was enlarged and rebuilt. The altar, which stands in the west instead of the usual east of the church, was donated by the von Oeynhausen / Pohlmann couple at the beginning of the 18th century. During the renovation in 1954/1955, old ceiling paintings from 1523 were uncovered. Some tombstones from the former cemetery have been preserved around the church. On the outer wall of the church itself, a tombstone from the 16th century was placed, which shows the Minden canon Conrad von Aswede . The 600-year-old linden tree next to the church is also worth seeing.

For other buildings see → List of architectural monuments in Hille

Parks and natural monuments

With the Großes Torfmoor nature reserve, the Bastauwiesen nature reserve and the Mindener Wald recreation area , Hille has a number of natural spaces that are worth protecting.

On the northern slope of the Wiehengebirge, the old Rothenuffeln farmer's bath with its sulfur-containing springs has established itself. Here is an old spa park, which invites the spa guests to stroll.

The 40 designated natural monuments in the municipal area consist of 39 trees, consisting of individual trees, groups of trees and a hedge, and the pond in the Aulmoor of Holzhausen II as the only two-dimensional object.

Sports

Hille and the surrounding area is a focus of the German handball scene . The neighboring clubs TuS Nettelstedt-Lübbecke and Grün-Weiß Dankersen Minden play in the handball Bundesliga . The national handball players Dieter Waltke and Frank von Behren come from Hille. Each of the local sports clubs has its own handball department. The TV Sachsenroß Hille played four years in the Regionalliga West and took part in the DHB Cup once. The Eintracht Oberlübbe women's team played in the regional league for three years and once took part in the DHB Cup .

Regular events

The Hiller Market has been celebrated every April and September since 1564 . In the large spa park in Rothenuffeln, the Rothenuffeln youth wind orchestra stages the large park lighting every two years on the first weekend after the school holidays .

Culinary specialties

A lot of grain is grown in the region. Some of it is traditionally distilled to make grain and moor brandy. There is still an old distillery in Hille.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Old Hiller train station
Kleinbahn near Hartum
Mittelland Canal near Minden

The infrastructure of the municipality of Hille is characterized by the main ridge of the Wiehengebirge, which runs from east to west, and the Mittelland Canal , which runs in the same direction .

The B 65 runs through the municipality from Hanover to Osnabrück. This supraregional road connection used to be of greater importance; Some of their tasks were shifted to the south side of the Wiehengebirge due to the construction of the A 30 .

The closest train stations are Minden and Bad Oeynhausen (main line Bielefeld – Hanover or Osnabrück – Hanover) and Lübbecke on the Ravensberger Bahn . In addition, freight trains and a museum railway ( Museums-Eisenbahn Minden (MEM) ) run on the Mindener Kreisbahnen route from Hille station via Hartum to Minden-Oberstadt.

Hille and its individual parts of the municipality can be reached with regional and dial-a-bus buses from Minden , Lübbecke , Espelkamp , Rahden or Bad Oeynhausen . Since August 2010 a citizens' bus has been running from Holzhausen via Hille to Hartum. Hille belongs to the tariff association “Der Sechser” ( OWL Verkehr GmbH ).

The present federal waterway Mittellandkanal, which was built until 1915, crosses the community as an important traffic route . This is where the Hille port is located , which is networked with the Mindener Kreisbahnen.

The Radfernwege Bremen Bad Oeynhausen , mill route and Wellness cycle route traversing the municipality.

Established businesses

The area of the community Hille was and is strongly characterized by agriculture. In addition to farms on good loess soils, there were many regions with poor soils and poor incomes. Many residents were therefore forced to look elsewhere for work. The linen industry grew stronger in the 18th century and the cigar industry in the 19th century . Both were strongly influenced by domestic manufacturing and home work. In addition, the forest provided the basis for the furniture industry , which was widespread here, but which did not specialize as much here as the kitchen furniture industry in the Ravensberger Land to the south .

An example of this is Friedrich Priess GmbH & Co KG, a furniture factory in Hille that has existed since 1931. The Priess, Horstmann & Co. Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG in Unterlübbe works as a mechanical engineering company in the Möbelzulieferung.

Since many employees were forced to look for work outside of the region after the Second World War due to the poor economic situation, many commuted to the Volkswagen plant in Hanover . At that time, workers at Volkswagen could buy and sell so-called annual cars , which is why there was a brisk used car trade in the area.

The Pohlsche Heide waste disposal center , operated by the district, is located in the area of the Hille community and performs tasks within the framework of the waste disposal concept far beyond the district.

The R. Bücker EDV-Beratung Datentechnik GmbH is a medium-sized IT companies that UPHOFF Locksmith GmbH, a steel construction and locksmith company with 20 employees. There is also dtH Tiemann GmbH, which is active in window construction . In Unterlübbe you can find ESKATE Rohrverbindstechnik GmbH , a company in the metal processing industry specializing in the production of flange and clamping ring connections as well as special bent parts . A branch of the logistics company Rhenus GmbH can be found in the Hille port on the Mittelland Canal .

The Wiehengebirgsmolkerei is located in the village of Unterlübbe .

media

The public press in the area of the municipality of Hille is traditionally noticed from the Mittelzentrum Minden. So here is the circulation area of the Mindener Tageblatt , which always has a regional page Hille. The public broadcasting is the West German Broadcasting perceived as state broadcaster. The regional radio with a focus on East Westphalia is produced for radio and television from the WDR's Bielefeld studio. Radio Westfalica from Minden appears as a private competitor , whose local window is currently being strengthened.

Public facilities

The Hille volunteer fire brigade consists of nine independent fire fighting groups, each stationed in one of the villages in the community.

Health care is organized at the district level; the nearest hospitals are in Minden, Lübbecke and Rahden. The municipality is part of the catchment area of the Johannes Wesling Clinic, which was newly built in Minden in 2008 .

Furthermore, the German Red Cross local association Hille eV is represented in the community and subordinated to the DRK operational unit Minden-Lübbecke 02, in the context of non-police hazard prevention, with the operational unit middle active in disaster control .

In accordance with the Waste Act of the Federal Republic of Germany, waste from the Hille community is disposed of at the Pohlsche Heide waste disposal center .

education

For a long time, the villages belonging to the community had their own schools, in which classes were taught across all grades. After the population grew in the post-war period, year classes were introduced there. Due to the later onset of the decline in the birth rate, these could no longer be maintained and were summarized. As a result, individual villages no longer have their own primary school , and school buses have been set up for the pupils. Today only Hille, Nordhemmern, Oberlübbe and Rothenuffeln have their own primary school.

For the larger community of Hille, the task arose of offering secondary schools in the community area, whereas it used to be customary to go to the district towns of Minden or Lübbecke to attend a higher school. In the village of Hille, the secondary school was converted into a comprehensive school with upper secondary school in the 1990s, a gymnasial branch was approved in 2006 and the Hille comprehensive school was renamed the Hille Verbundschule.

Furthermore, the schools for educational assistance of the district of Minden-Lübbecke and the school for speech-impaired people of the district of Minden-Lübbecke are located in the community.

The community Hille belongs to the association of the adult education center Minden , which also offers courses in the community area.
