Hartum is a district of the Hille community in the Minden-Lübbecke district in East Westphalia-Lippe .

Hartum lies west of the district town of Minden and north of the Mittelland Canal ; in the east Hartum borders on the district of Hahlen of the city of Minden, in the north on the districts Holzhausen II and Nordhemmern , in the west on the district Südhemmern and in the south on the districts Unterlübbe and Rothenuffeln .

Hartum was first mentioned in a document in 1248. The current church was built between 1889 and 1892.

Until the municipal reorganization on January 1, 1973, Hartum was an independent municipality with a total area of ​​around 8.26 km² and 1621 inhabitants. Then it was incorporated into Hille. The community belonged to the Hartum office in the Minden district and was the seat of the official administration. After the reorganization, the seat of the Hille municipal administration is located in Hartum .

The parish of Hartum comprised the villages of Hartum, Hahlen , Holzhausen and Nordhemmern until 1904 . The families of this church district have been documented in church records since 1661 . The first church book was created by the pastor Johann Daniel Weddigen. In 1980, Heinz Riechmann began to edit and publish all books of the church district.

A previously known nursery rhyme was: "Dear moon, you walk so quietly over Hahlen, Hartum, Hille". The text refers to the route of the Kleinbahn from Minden via the mentioned villages to Hille.

Protestant church

If you approach the village, you can see the 40 m high church tower of the Evangelical Church Hartum from a distance . The landmark of the place indicates the extraordinary size of the church on the main street (length: 37 m; width: 25 m; height of the vaulted ceiling: 13 m; originally 1302 seats).

Today's church in neo-Gothic style was built between 1889 and 1892 according to plans by the architect Heinrich Hutze from Barkhausen. He also designed the Bismarck Tower on Jakobsberg and the Evangelical Church in Isselhorst . A new organ was built in 1896–1897 by the Prince. Schaumburg-Lippischen Hof organ builder Ernst Klassmeier from Kirchheide built. In 1986/87 it was added to the list of monuments . The mechanical tower clock from 1898 is a special feature. It is one of the few clocks from this period that is still in function today. One of the three bells in the tower dates from 1454.

Windmill

Hartum and its mill are part of the Westphalian Mill Road and the Mill Route . The Wall-Holländer was built in 1877. With its mighty conical mill tower made of sandstone and the new mill hood with sail blades and compass rose, the windmill regained its characteristic appearance. The earth wall was replaced by a brick ground floor over time.

The building owner of the mill was the municipality of Hartum, it was a contemporary replacement for the no longer operational post mill. The memorial stone in the tower contains a motto as well as the names of the mill builder, the community council and the community councilors.

Official prison

The former Hartum official prison was built in 1896. It is a simple and unpretentious structure that is 12.60 meters long and 5.00 meters wide. Inside the building there were three cells and an equipment room for the fire engine. On the walls of the cells there are numerous writings by prisoners between 1941 and 1944 in German, Polish, Russian and French. The building was restored in 1992 by the Heimatverein.
