Ship mill Minden

The mill route , also known as the Westphalian mill route , is a circular cycle route in the mill district of Minden-Lübbecke in North Rhine-Westphalia and neighboring areas. The route is designed to connect the 43 local mills on a circuit of around 320 km. On a side route, three mills in the Lower Saxony district of Nienburg , which are located near the state and district border, are also included in the Westphalian mill route.

The mill route leads on largely low- traffic paths through a cultural landscape that is characterized by the Weser and Wiehen Mountains with the transition to the North German Plain and the Weser River . More and more tourists are using the infrastructure of the cycle paths , so there are restaurants and overnight accommodations along the main paths.

A distinction is made between a northern and a southern variant of the mill route. Both variants can also be combined with the Minden Museum Railway (e.g. Hille, Südhemmern, Kleinenbremen ), the Rahden Museum Railway (e.g. Ton Heide, Rahden) or the Mindener Fahrgastschiffahrt (Südhemmern).

Details about the mills can be found in the article about the Westphalian Mill Road .

Northern route

The starting point is the ship mill in Minden . You drive along the Weser to Petershagen to cross the Weser there. After a loop to get over Schlüsselburg back to Peter Hagen. This section is approx. 65 km long and passes 11 mills.

From Petershagen the route leads via Hille to Espelkamp and Rahden . The so-called Große Stein , the largest boulder in northwest Germany, is located in the Rahden district of Ton Heide , and one of the two “Rossmühlen” on the mill route is in the museum courtyard . This section is also around 65 km long. There is also a secondary route from Großenheerse to Wegholm via Lower Saxony. The path leads past the Harrienstedt watermill and the Mösloh and Hoyersvörde windmills .

From Rahden it goes via Oppenwehe to Levern . The Oppenweher Moor is located near Oppenwehe . The next destination, towards the Wiehen Mountains, is Preußisch Oldendorf , a town with three state-approved climatic health resorts . A special route from the city of Preußisch Oldendorf leads to the castles and mansions in the area. You now have to decide whether you want to continue with the northern variant or whether to take the southern variant.

The northern tour goes via Lübbecke past the large peat bog back to Minden. The distance from Rahden back to Minden is around 85 km.

Southern route

The southern route runs from Preußisch Oldendorf via Hüllhorst , Bad Oeynhausen and Porta Westfalica to Minden. The length of this route is around 95 km. In contrast to the previous, flat route, the path now crosses the Wiehen and later the Weser Mountains.

After visiting the Hüllhorst-Schnathorst windmill or the "Schöne Mühle" water mill in Wulferdingsen (in Bad Oeynhausen ), you can change to the northern route via a gradient at the so-called " Wallücke ". Along the Weser you reach Minden via Holzhausen (windmill) and the Weser cycle path , which saves you from climbing the Weser Mountains. This path leads past Kleinenbremen , where the so-called visitor mine is located.
