Location of Ton Heath in Rahden

Ton Heath is a district of the city of Rahden in the north of North Rhine-Westphalia . The village borders on Lower Saxony . On January 1, 1973 Tonheide was incorporated into the town of Rahden. At the same time, the community part of Schmalge was separated and reclassified to Espelkamp .

1784 people now live in the district, which arose on May 1, 1858 from various farmers in the community of Wehe .

Attractions

In the predominantly agricultural area there are some sights, such as the Großer Stein (one of the largest boulders in northern Germany) and a windmill .

  • The Galerie-Holländer was built in 1878. Its plastered "stone octagon" on the also octagonal two-story substructure is extremely striking. The windy sail wings and the stert make this windmill, visible from afar, a sought-after photo object. The mill was built from around 150,000 bricks that were produced in the field fire in Ton Heath. It is located on the Westphalian Mill Road and the Mill Route . Since 1995, the Ton Heider mill has been used for further purposes: there is a registry office on the second floor . Here one can say the "yes-word" far away from all official offices; this should be an unforgettable experience for many. In the half-timbered building next to the mill there is the possibility to have a drink , a champagne breakfast or a small buffet.
  • The Great Stone of Ton Heath is around ten meters long, seven meters wide and three meters high. The weight is about 350 tons. The boulder is about a billion years old. It is very likely that the stone comes from the Swedish province of Blekinge, 750 kilometers away . It is one of the largest known erratic boulders in northern Germany. At the beginning of the 20th century the stone was exposed and measured. Attempts at that time to lift the stone failed, as did the attempts by a British pioneer unit and the Federal Railroad Central Office from Minden . On August 30, 1981, it was finally possible to lift the stone and bring it to its current location (around 70 m from the site).

traffic

The two stops at Ton Heide and Hahnenkamp are on the Uchte – Rahden railway line . There is no daily local rail transport. There are only seasonal trains of the Rahden-Uchte museum railway .
