Levern was first mentioned in a document between 969 and 996 . In 1227 Konrad I von Rüdenberg , Bishop of Minden from 1209 to 1236, founded a Cistercian monastery in Levern. The monastery no longer existed in 1543; During the Reformation , the monastery was converted into a free world, aristocratic women's monastery.

Until the regional reform, Levern belonged to what was then the Lübbecke district and to the Levern office . On January 1, 1973 Levern was incorporated into the new municipality of Stemwede.

Until the 1950s, Levern was a health resort in which naturally occurring sources with a high sulfur content were used for a sulfur bath. In a feasibility study commissioned by the municipality of Stemwede, it was found that it is possible to resume spa operations on profitable terms.
