Maurice André (1969)

Maurice André (born May 21, 1933 in Alès ; † February 25, 2012 in Bayonne ) was a French classical trumpeter and university teacher .

Life

Maurice André was born near the town of Alès in the south of France . At the age of fourteen he learned to play the trumpet , alongside his apprenticeship as a miner in the coal region of the Cevennes . For him, his time as a miner was “a school of mutual help, of sincerity, quite the opposite of the music and media world.” His father, himself a miner, made it possible for him to take private lessons with Barthélemy at the Conservatoire de Paris , which Maurice André owing to his extraordinary Talent soon took up as a student. In the first year he received the first honorary award for cornet , one year later for trumpet.

After graduating from the Conservatory, he worked as a solo trumpeter in the Orchester Lamoureux for several years . In 1955 he received first prize at the Concours de Genève , and in 1963 he won the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. Then began a period of touring and participating in international festivals, e.g. B. in Athens , Bordeaux , Salzburg and Vienna , Oxford and Cambridge , Moscow and New York . Maurice André soon became one of the most sought-after soloists for performances of Bach's Christmas Oratorio or Handel's oratorios.

He helped his instrument to regain popularity by introducing the piccolo trumpet to baroque music, with new interpretations of classical scores and by encouraging composers such as André Jolivet , Marcel Landowski and Henri Tomasi to compose pieces for trumpet.

His repertoire mainly comprised works from the 17th and 18th centuries, but also contemporary music. He has been awarded the Grand Prix du Disque more than ten times .

In 1981 he recorded a jazz-oriented production with the pianist Claude Bolling , the Toot Suite . He also recorded several jazz titles with Michel Legrand's Big Band. In total, he has recorded over 250 records, many of which went gold or platinum.

In 2003, Maurice André said in an interview with Le Monde newspaper : “The trumpet is a difficult instrument. She arouses mixed feelings because she has retained her warlike commitment, the gourm of triumph and the biblical image of the apocalypse. The trumpet can also make girls dance in a dance. "

Teaching

From 1967 to 1978 Maurice André taught as a professor at the Conservatoire de Paris. Among his students were Bernard Soustrot and Guy Touvron .
