The student of Paul Le Flem and Edgar Varèse later headed the avant-garde group Jeune France together with Olivier Messiaen . From 1945 to 1959 he was musical director of the Comédie-Française in Paris and from 1966 to 1970 professor of composition at the Conservatoire de Paris .

music

Under the influence of Edgar Varèse , Jolivet turned away from the neoclassicism prevalent in France around 1929 and described his intentions as follows: From a technical point of view, my goal is to free myself completely from the tonal system; From an aesthetic point of view, my aim is to restore music to its original function in the realms of magic and invocation.

In Jolivet's work, influences from Indian instrumental music, Arabic chants, ritual music of indigenous cultures (e.g. Polynesia ) and jazz (especially in his most famous works, the two trumpet concerts) can be recognized.
