The Bastau is a 19.2 km long orographically left or western tributary of the Weser in the East Westphalian district of Minden-Lübbecke in North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

The small river has no clear source , the source area is in the Lübbeck town of Eilhausen .

The Bastau flows on the southern edge of the " Großes Torfmoor " nature reserve , between the moor and the Wiehengebirge, parallel to federal highway 65 and the Mittelland Canal from west to east. Their water comes from small streams that arise in the Wiehen Mountains and from drainage ditches in the moor. In this area, the Bastau belongs to the " Bastauwiesen " nature reserve and has been under protection since 1988. It owes this above all to the wet meadows that have not been cleared, which are home to rare plants and a bird refuge.

After the "Bastauwiesen" protected area, the river in Rodenbeck reaches the Minden city area. From here to the confluence with the Weser, the small river is a highly straightened flowing water that has been developed far from nature. In summer it tends to become very herbaceous. Occasionally there is a rich fish population.

In the area of the city it is piped over a distance of about 150 m at the level of Portastraße, then flows through the park-like Mindener Glacis , where part of the stream water feeds the swan pond, and flows into the Weser.

The mouth of the Bastau is considered to be the possible origin of the name of the city of Minden.

history

The Bastau drained the swampy lowland from the Hiller Moor to the north of the Porta Westfalica, where it originally had its original confluence with the Weser near the village of Barkhausen . In 1280 the course of the river was relocated, the Bastau now flowed to the city of Minden to fill the moat within the Minden fortress . It was used until 1904. The river flowed through the city and also drove numerous water mills there. The Bastau then flowed into the Weser at the watering place on the Schlagde in Minden. There is still an old walled-up mouth hole in the former city wall . When it was relocated to the Glacis and the confluence with the Weser above the city of Minden, a weir was built to guarantee water retention in the parks (swan pond).

Ecological continuity in the mouth area

The district of Minden-Lübbecke, as the lower water authority, had a so-called location concept drawn up for the Bastau. Accordingly, the weir must disappear or be made accessible to fish. The city of Minden started planning this in 2012, and implementation will take place in 2013/14.

The construction work for this began at the end of June 2015. For this purpose, the weir , which is under monument protection , will be removed in the area where the Bastau meets the Weser and a bottom slide is installed. This reinforced bottom , studded with small obstacles, enables a steep ramp at 200 meters, which compensates for the height difference of the previous waterfall at the weir. The flow is slowed down by the obstacles and additional air is bubbled in. During the construction work, the river will be diverted into the Schwanenteich and from there fed to the Weser via a pipeline.

The renaturation enables microorganisms and fish to revive the Bastau; this also significantly increases the recreational value in the glacis. The construction work for this was carried out and completed in 2015.
