history

Around 1915 the Mittelland Canal reached Hille in the course of construction progress to the east and at the same time the Südlände was built. Also in 1915, a rail connection, initially in meter gauge , to the Minden-Lübbecke railway line was established. This means that trimodal transhipment ship / rail / road was already possible there over 100 years ago .

There were no major industrial settlements, the area remained predominantly agricultural and in the following year the canal was pierced eastwards to Hanover .
In 1956/57, the rail connection was initially switched to standard gauge and the section in the direction of Lübbecke was then completely abandoned and dismantled around 1972.
In the mid-1960s, the (Raiffeisen) Nordlände were built in the course of upgrading and expansion work on the canal, and these were also equipped with a rail connection. In addition, a turning facility for ships up to 85 m in length and berths north-west of the port were created during this time.
Since 1973 Südhemmern was incorporated into Hille, the small area there has also been part of the Hilles port facilities. This is used by passenger shipping and for excursions.

In 2008 the Port of Hille merged with five other Westphalian ports to form the HafenBand Mittellandkanal .

Commerce and infrastructure

Even today, the Hille port is mainly set up for the handling of building materials, forestry and agricultural products. It is managed by Rhenus AG and Raiffeisen Landbund eG Hille. There are several cranes, a crawler excavator, scales and conveyors for bulk goods . There is also a dry transshipment point with two 10 t indoor cranes and a heavy-duty slab. There are storage facilities on 70,000 m² of open-air storage space, in 12,000 m² of partially heated indoor storage facilities and in five silos.

Up to four large goods motor ships can be handled at the same time on the quays and there is the possibility of an additional eight ships to be idle locally.

For small vehicles there is only one slip place 70 m west of the southern area ; otherwise the port in Hille is rather unsuitable for recreational boating.

traffic

Local roads connect the port to the federal highway 65 , which runs 3 km to the south . Both piers are accessible via pull-out tracks and shunting routes for goods traffic to Minden . Passenger transport has not taken place since 1972, except for excursions and museums. The public transport offers, on demand, only a call-a-ride and a Bürgerbus on.
