Hafen is a district of the Lower Saxon city of Osnabrück . It is located in the northwest of Osnabrück and had 2595 inhabitants at the end of 2019. It covers an area of 406.24 hectares.
The most important economic factor is the city harbor, around which there are mainly commercial areas. The port is connected to the Mittelland Canal by the branch canal Osnabrück (also branch canal ) .
In 2004, 1.28 million tons of goods were handled in the port area, of which 629,000 tons came from shipping. In 2008 1.24 million tons were handled, in 2009 the handling collapsed.
The port railway operated by Stadtwerke Osnabrück , which also operates the port, runs in the area.
The internationally operating company Hellmann Worldwide Logistics , which was founded in 1871 as a forwarding company, is one of the companies based at the port . It uses the former Speicher III, which was built in 1934 as a grain store, after a major renovation since 2008 as an award-winning office building. Another company based there is the paper manufacturer Kämmerer (part of Ahlstrom until 2016 ).
Passenger shipping has been back on the branch canal since 2007.
In the Hafen district there is a former barracks area of the British Armed Forces in Germany , the Roberts Barracks. The British armed forces left Osnabrück by the end of March 2009.
In the area of Bramscher Straße there was a connection to tram line 2, which went from Haste via Bramscher Straße, Hasetor, Nikolaiort, Neumarkt to Schölerberg.
In the northern part of the port is the Osnabrück-Piesberg train station, the boarding point for special trips with museum trains via Osnabrück-Altstadt to Osnabrück-Hauptbahnhof, which take place several days a year.
history
After the Mittelland Canal was not routed through the cities of Hildesheim , Salzgitter and Osnabrück , as originally planned, for reasons of cost and length , it was decided in 1905 to build branch canals so that the emerging industry in these cities also benefited from the more favorable transport conditions Mittelland Canal could benefit. In the case of Osnabrück, the branch canal leads from the starting point of the Osnabrück harbor to Bramsche , where it joins the Mittelland Canal. Originally, it was planned to run the branch canal to the iron and steel works in Georgsmarienhütte , but this was also discarded for reasons of cost. In 1912 the development of the port area and the excavation of the port basin began. On April 3, 1916, the first barge, coming from Bremen via Minden, arrived in the port of Osnabrück with a load of 475 t of oats.
