Dodesheide is a district in the north-east of Osnabrück with 9789 inhabitants (12/2019) spread over an area of 4.49 km². The district is limited in the north by the Vehrter Landstrasse, in the west by the Landwehr, a former fortification of the Osnabrück city area consisting of ramparts and ditches, in the south by the Sandbach and the Osnabrück – Bremen railway line and in the east by the city limits.

history

The district consists of parts of the former districts of Schinkel and Haste . In the Prussian municipality register of 1871, a Gut Dodeshaus , next to Gut Gartlage and Gut Crispinsburg , is listed as belonging to the community of Schinkel.

The most important building in the district is the Gartlage house , a former Jesuit residence that was converted for residential purposes a few years ago. Otherwise, the development in the Dodesheide dates from the 20th century, apart from several farms. Since the 1950s, residential development has been systematically promoted in several construction phases; The demonstrative building project “Dodeshaus” in the 1960s in the area between Haster Weg and Ellerstraße, which is mainly characterized by bungalows in row construction , is particularly noteworthy .

At the beginning of the 1970s, Dodesheide was under discussion as a location for the newly founded University of Osnabrück ; In the end, however, the decision was made in favor of the Westerberg as the location, the headquarters are in Osnabrück Castle . A remnant of the plans at the time is the Dodesheide student residence on Mecklenburger Straße, which with 206 places is one of the largest student residences in the city.

In the east of Dodesheide is the former British barracks Mercer and Imphal Barracks (also barracks on Limberg ), which was part of the Osnabrück garrison that existed until 2009 . The barracks were built on the site of the Nazi ammunition factory "Teuto-Metallwerke GmbH" after the Second World War. Outside the barracks there were also many soldiers' apartments and two British schools. Since the troop withdrawal in 2009, the district has been affected by structural changes, the British schools have been closed and the soldiers' apartments have been rented or sold to ordinary people. The around 70 hectare barracks area itself is in a conversion process ; commercial and green areas in particular are intended for subsequent use.

The usual interpretation of the name Dodesheide as "death heather" is probably wrong; The name is probably derived from the old German proper name "Dodo", so it is to be interpreted as "Dodos Heide".
