Kalkhügel is a district of Osnabrück with 6,315 inhabitants (12/2018) spread over an area of 3.02 km². The district is named after a 94 meter high hill, which is part of the Osnabrück hill country .

Location, structure and traffic

The Kalkhügel district is located in the southwest of the city of Osnabrück. Clockwise (starting from 12 noon) Kalkhügel borders the Osnabrück districts of Desert , Schölerberg , Nahne and Sutthausen . The main traffic axis is Sutthauser Straße, which leads from the city center to Sutthausen or the A 30 . The eastern part of the district along Sutthauser Straße is largely built-up, while the western part consists of agriculture, forest areas and allotment gardens. In the south lies the Burenkamp industrial park .

The bus lines 51/52 drive over Magdalenenstraße and Hauswörmannsweg, the 71/72 open up the area along Sutthauser Straße.

Girls quarter

The so-called "girls' quarter" around Magdalenenstrasse, Marthastrasse, Klarastrasse and Herminenstrasse as well as the Weidnerstrasse was built at the turn of the century when the Osnabrück construction association opened up the area between Sutthauserstrasse and Brinkstrasse for settlement. One of the founding fathers of the Bauverein is the pastor of the Katharinenkirche, Balduin Weidner. The street is said to have been named after the names of his four daughters: Klara, Hermine, Magdalena and Martha.

Facilities

In addition to residential developments, the Kalkhügel district also houses a considerable number of educational and service institutions as well as authorities and private companies. Many of them have settled in the period since 1994, when the Bundeswehr gave up the General Martini barracks of the telecommunications troops on Hauswörmannsweg, which took up a large area in the east of the district. The former barracks area was then partly built on with residential houses, partly converted into an administrative center.

Churches

Churches of the Kalkhügel are the catholic. St. Pius Church on Knappsbrink and the evangelical free church Andreas community on Hauswörmannsweg. The ev.-luth. Melanchthon Church was abandoned and deedicated in 2015, the listed building from the 1960s has been used for other purposes since then. Since then, members of the evangelical Südstadt parish, to which the church belonged before the closure, have had to switch to the other churches in the parish, such as the Luther Church in the Schölerberg district.

education

The city of Osnabrück operates a school center on Gottlieb-Planck-Straße consisting of the Graf-Stauffenberg-Gymnasium and the Bertha-von-Suttner-Realschule . The Elisabeth-Siegel-Schule primary school and the Sophie Scholl evening high school are located at Knappsbrink . Under the sponsorship of the district there are the vocational schools on Brinkstrasse and the house of learning of the district's own adult education center. The vocational training center Osnabrücker Land is a non-profit association, the Protestant family training center is church sponsored.
