Pye (pronounced: [ ˈpʰiːə ]) is a district of Osnabrück with 2,976 inhabitants (12/2018) spread over an area of 7.51 km². It is popular with its residents mainly because of its location on the outskirts of the city in the countryside with good transport links to the city.
Until 1972, Pye was a village in the Osnabrück district . It belonged to the parish of St. Johann in Osnabrück and was predominantly Catholic. Its economy was geared towards agriculture. On July 1, 1972, it became a district of Osnabrück. Since 1978 it has formed its own parish (St. Matthias).
In Pye is the Piesberg (name probably derived from "Pyes Berg"). Coal was still being mined here in the 19th and 20th centuries. Stones are still quarried in the quarry on Piesberg today. In addition, until June 2006, the Piesberg housed the largest garbage dump in the Osnabrück region. The Museum of Industrial Culture is located on the Piesberg and provides an overview of the history of mining on the Piesberg.
There is a street in Pye called “Am Pyer Ding”. This name is probably based on the old Germanic term Thing - so there was such a Thing in Pye.
The nature around Pye is mainly characterized by small to medium-sized forests, meadows and the branch canal, branch of the Mittelland Canal .
The Osnabrück-Piesberg train station has been located at the entrance to Pye since 1857, where special trains, including steam locomotives, are currently taking place on event days from Osnabrück Hbf via Osnabrück old town to Osnabrück-Piesberg.
