history

Between 1934 and 1938, the section of the Mittelland Canal from Wolfsburg towards Magdeburg was built. In January 1938, the city harbor temporarily went into (bag) operation. For a few months it was the final port of the canal from the west. From the beginning it was equipped with rail connections directly on the piers, which connected to the railway lines to Weferlingen and Gardelegen . The electrically operated crane had a load capacity of 5 t with a radius of 24 m, so that it could load or unload two cargo ships lying next to each other in the package at the same time. Trimodal ship / rail / road transport was already possible at that time . The operation of the facilities was the responsibility of Münsterschen Schifffahrts- und Lagerhaus AG and by July 1938 over 40,000 tons of goods had been handled. Mainly raw materials, forest and agricultural products, fuel and building materials were handled. In the autumn of 1938, the breakthrough to the Elbe finally took place and the quantities transported rose sharply. After the outbreak of the Second World War , the port benefited from a further increase in handling volumes, which stagnated at a high level from 1942 when the further construction of the canal east of Magdeburg came to a standstill due to the war.

In April 1945 the facilities were occupied by American and British troops and handed over to the Soviet occupation forces on July 1, 1945 . With the establishment of the German Democratic Republic from 1949 onwards, extensive social restructuring and administrative reforms took place. The company was nationalized and mainly the products of the "state-owned companies" of the agriculture and construction industry, which had been developed into large cooperative combines, were handled. Due to a German-German transit agreement of 1971, the Mittelland Canal was gradually expanded for European ships from 1976 onwards . 1975 was for the VoPo -Abtlg. Water police built their own small port opposite the city port.

Only after the fall of the Wall was, after further expansion and upgrading work, it was also possible to use large motor cargo ships and push convoys up to 185 m in length. The port facilities were modernized in the 1990s, and in 1993 more efficient handling, storage and silo facilities were added in the city port.

In 1998 the new city harbor went into operation, in the 2000s the mooring areas near Wedringen were built and further businesses settled there. Since 2003, the Haldensleben marina has been developing with a specially adapted infrastructure for sport and leisure shipping . In 2011, the construction of the additional south port began.

Commerce and infrastructure

On the Bülstringen-Ost site there are two gantry slewing cranes with a load capacity of 12.5 tons each, conveyor belts and handling equipment for bulk goods for loading trucks onto ships, a grain warehouse with a capacity of 25,000 tons, three warehouses for fertilizers and animal feed, six silos and 35,000 m² of outdoor storage space available. Three ships can be processed there at the same time and two more can be idle. The operator there is Umschlags- und Hafenbetriebs GmbH Haldensleben (UHH) .

The border Zollstraße uses nowadays, because their city nearby, mainly the passenger shipping as a dock.

At the new city port there is a 45 t gantry crane, a rail connection to the pier and a covered dry transshipment point. Two ships can be processed there at the same time.

The old city port also offers a rail connection and a dry transhipment point with funds for bulk goods. A 10 t mobile crane also enables S / S / S container loading there. There is also a warehouse for 10,000 t of bulk goods, 10,000 m² of open-air storage space and a wagon hauling facility .

The south port has been under construction since 2011. So far, a huge warehouse with 20,000 m² and a further 20,000 m² of open storage space have been built there.

The Wedringen lying area has no handling, supply or disposal facilities. Up to two dozen ships can stand still or turn there. There is a restaurant to the north and there is a public slipway for small vehicles .

Since 1997, the annual cargo handling in Haldensleben has almost doubled from 0.94 to 1.8 million tons. Mainly building materials, agricultural products as well as animal feed and fertilizers are handled in trimodal ship / rail / road transport.

traffic

Local roads open up all parts of the port to the L 24 , the federal highway 245 and the federal highway 71 .

There are only rail connections in the old and new city harbors with the exception of the piers ; all other parts of the port have not yet been opened up for rail traffic.
