Dieter “Jimmy” Waltke (born December 26, 1953 in Hille ) is a former German national handball player . He played as a left winger . He got his nickname "Jimmy" because his hair was as long as rock star Jimi Hendrix.

In the national team

At the Handball World Championship in 1978 he won the title with the German national handball team .

His performance in the final was remarkable: In the 39th minute, coach Vlado Stenzel replaced him, who had not played a game during the entire World Cup. The German team was in the lead with one goal. He then threw the 14:12, the 15:12 and the 16:12. Shortly after his third hit, Vlado Stenzel replaced him after 193 seconds. In total, Dieter Waltke played 76 times in the German national handball team from 1975 to 1981 and scored 118 goals.

In 1977 he became German champions with GW Dankersen .

1976 and 1979 German cup winner .

In 1981 he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with TuS Nettelstedt .

Today's occupation

Waltke worked from 1983 to 2018 as senior teacher for sport and history at the Söderblom-Gymnasium in Espelkamp, East Westphalia . He retired on July 13, 2018.
