The 9th men's handball world championship was held from January 26th to February 5th, 1978 in Denmark . A total of 16 teams took part in the tournament. The team of the Federal Republic of Germany won the world championship title , which prevailed in the final with 20:19 against the USSR . The team of the team of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) reached third place.

The first seven teams qualified directly for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, the teams competed in four groups with four teams each. The two best placed in each group qualified for the main round, the third placed played in a group for places 9 to 12, the fourth placed were eliminated.

Main round

The two best-placed teams in each group reached the main round. The teams from the preliminary round groups A and B came into group I, the teams from groups C and D into group II. The result of the direct duel between the two teams from the same preliminary round group was carried over to the main round.

In front of 7,000 spectators - including 2,000 Germans - the German team defeated the big favorites USSR in a dramatic final in the Brøndby Hall in Copenhagen with 20:19 (11:11). For the first time after the Second World War , a German team became handball world champions. It was not until 2007 that the German selection was able to repeat this success.
