Péter Kovács [ ˈpeːtɛr ˈkovaːtʃ ] (born April 8, 1955 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian handball player and current coach.

In his time Kovács was considered one of the best handball players in the world. With his home club Honvéd Budapest , he won the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1982 . He also won six national championships with Honvéd. He later moved to Germany and played for OSC Dortmund , TV Großwallstadt , TUSEM Essen and SG Hameln in the Bundesliga.

Kovács made his tournament debut in the national team in 1976 at the Summer Olympics in Montreal . At the Handball World Cup in 1978 he was the top scorer with Jerzy Klempel . In addition to two other Olympic participations in 1980 and 1988, which Hungary finished in fourth place, winning the silver medal in the handball world championship in 1986 was Kovács' greatest success with his selection team. He played his last World Cup in Iceland in 1995 when he made another comeback at the age of 40. With 1797 goals in 323 international matches, he was the record international goal scorer in handball before the Icelander Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson overtook him at the 2018 European Championship .

As a trainer he has z. B. Pick Szeged, Dunaferr, headed the Hungarian women's junior team, the Turkish senior women's team, and between summer 2010 and early 2011 the Romanian women's team CS Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea .

He is married and has two children, Marton and Andras.
