Mychajlo Olexijowytsch Ischtschenko ( Ukrainian Михайло Олексійович Іщенко , Russian Михаил Алексеевич Ищенко , born May 19, 1950 in Morozovsk ) is a former Soviet handball player .
Career
The 1.91 m tall handball goalkeeper played for the clubs Burewestnik Zaporischschja and WS Kiev.
While Ishchenko remained unsuccessful with these clubs, he became student world champion in 1971 with the Soviet student selection . With the Soviet national team , he finished fifth at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Four years later he became Olympic champion at the Montreal Olympics. At the 1978 World Cup in Denmark he was defeated in the final of the West German team . He also had to admit defeat in the final at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, this time to the East German team . In 1982 he became world champion in Germany of all places. He played a total of 167 international matches in which he scored exactly one goal.
For the Olympic victory in 1976 he received the Honorary Master of Sports of the USSR (Заслуженный мастер спорта СССР) and the Badge of Honor of the Soviet Union .
Mychajlo Ishchenko studied at the National Mining Institute in Dnipropetrovsk and at the Institute of Physical Culture in Kiev .
