On January 9, 2003, a Fokker F28-1000 crashed on TANS-Perú flight 222 while approaching Chachapoyas airport . The machine crashed into the Cerro Coloque , killing all 46 occupants.

The TANS Perú aircraft took off after a stopover in Chiclayo at 8:17 a.m. in the direction of Chachapoyas and rose to a cruising altitude of 5790 meters (19,000 feet ) in order to follow the V-3 airway . At 8:32 am, the pilots turned on course 060 and sank to 3960 meters (13,000 feet) to begin the approach to Chachapoyas Airport. At around 8:45 a.m., the Fokker flew at an altitude of 3,450 meters (10,350 feet) against the mountainside, just under 35 meters below the summit. The rescue teams did not find the wreck until two days later.

Cause of accident

The pilots had dropped below the minimum safety altitude due to the loss of situational awareness.

Others

Just two years later, a Boeing 737-200 on the TANS-Perú flight 204 was also flown off-road during the approach, whereby 40 of the 98 occupants died.
