At the XX. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , a men's handball competition was held. The Yugoslav team was Olympic champion ahead of Czechoslovakia and Romania . It was the Olympic premiere for indoor handball . In the 1936 Olympic Games has been field handball played. After that, there had been no handball tournaments at the Olympic Games for 36 years.
16 teams took part in the competition. They were divided into four groups (A – D) in which all four teams competed against each other once. The fourth-placed group A and B as well as C and D then played against each other, the winners of these two games played for 13th and 14th place, the losers for 15th and 16th place. The third-placed group A played against the third from group B, the third placed in group C played against the third in group D, and the winners from the two games for places 9 and 10, the losers for places 11 and 12.
The two best teams in each group entered the main round, the first and second placed in groups A and B in group I, the first and second placed in groups C and D in group II. Within the two groups, each team played again against everyone else. The fourth placed in Groups I and II then played for places 7 and 8, the third placed for places 5 and 6. The second placed played for the bronze medal (3rd place) and 4th place, the two group winners for Olympic gold and Olympic silver.
The first game of the competition took place on August 30, 1972, the final on September 10, 1972.
